“Hotel with rich history”
Reviewed 2 September 2014

Hotel has a rich history as a club so interior has a heavy British flavor like a wood fire place. Nice hotel, especially outdoors. Great location and friendly staff. Wifi doesn't work well. Left the place with some wonderful memories.

Positives first, the food is excellent and the staff are more than willing to be helpful.

We needed to change rooms as building works were taking place in the room next door, not to mention that the room smelled of B.O.

This place is beyond stuck up with its antiquated rules. Fancy a drink on the lawn in the sunshine? Not on your nelly, you can have it either in the reading room or your bedroom! You can have a drink on the lawn after 5pm though, when its too cold to do so. Want to play snooker, well you can but after 7pm you had better be wearing a suit jacket and tie, no matter how ridiculous it is to try and do that!

Are you with your other half who wants half a lager, expect her to get a look of complete distain. It mustn't be very lady like according to this hotel.

I have never been led to feel so uncomfortable in all of the places i have stayed around the world, avoid at all costs.

There is a fantastic hotel next door, go there instead!

The only people who would like this place are people who were officers in the british army, during world war 2. The only reason being that the place hasn't changed since then, both in decor and perspective.

Room Tip: None of them!

This is a real "club", founded in 1876. The hotel and the rooms appears "old", and of course you cannot find the same level you expect in a new structure. However, the old structure and furnitures in the rooms give a fascinating perspective, and we experienced a nice stay in an ancient atmosphere. The staff was extremely polite, even if not very professional (at the breakfast they did not find the tea cups...), breakfast was quite poor, and wifi very slow. If you can sacrifice some comodities and service for a unique atmosphere you will really enjoy this hotel, even if mean booking prices are quite high (but different offerts can be available...)

Memorable stay in a beautiful setting, a Scottish estate in Sri Lanka.

If you embrace the random situations, you will be rewarded with quite a compelling experience in this living museum!

Food is a bit pricey, service good but lacking some authenticity.

Staff are happy to lend jackets and ties to lightweight visitors. Hot water bottle bed turndown service very quaint in large colonial rooms.

Definitely worth a night for a blast from the past experience!

Classic British hotel old but very well maintained. Weather in the area is quite chilly and there is only one heater, so make sure you position it strategically. Ambience in the hotel is great, has the old British feel. Formal dinners served every night, you have to wear suits and will be served by waiters/waitresses. Breakfast is great, basic selection of food but more than sufficient. Location is perfect, 10 minutes of pleasant walk to town. City is quite far from the nearest train station, but you can hop on to a local bus which will take you there in about half hour.

We stayed here for three nights and the experience was great. The colonial style, old-Ceylon way of living is just proper for the atmosphere in Nuwara Eliya. We especially enjoyed the beautiful garden, the dinner, the fireplace burning of the coconut wood at night. The staffs here are also very friendly and well-trained. Location is great, quite but not far. The history of this club itself is worthing appreciating. All in all, it worth a second staying.
The night is very very cold here as in a tropical country. Do ask more blankets. If you have your dinner here, discounts is possible. We had three dinners here and got discounts for two.

Very nice hotel, maybe a bit expensive, but on the other hand finding a British club in Sri Lanka is almost priceless. Going there is an experience I’d strongly recommend, the only minus in our stay was that, not having a jacket and a tie, as per their rules we had to eat in a room separate from all other guests, which was a bit sad…. Anyway, apart from this we really liked the whole stay, despite being a bit "out of context".
