Unique hotel

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 21 May 2011
Before coming here we visited an operating tea factory and the hotel was converted true to original. Staff is friendly, good food and beverage. Downside: We had to change the room 3 times but unfortunately all twin beds put together (no king size matrace). No proper feather duvet, only blanket. Low quality towels in the bathroom. Great about it: Style. Service. View. Nice gardens. Tea Factory. Good to know: Difficult to get here (path is not very convenient - suggest to arrive before sunset). Smart/Casual dresscode required in the restaurant. It's chilly up here, suggest shoes, long sleeve and long pants.

The journey to this hotel was one hell of a drive but once we reached, it was just breathtaking. From a distance, this hotel looks like "OMG!!! Did I travel all the way for this?" but once you enter, its all worth it. I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights with my husband and my sister-in-law's family. The decor of this hotel was very nice, with the left and the huge generator.

As soon as you enter, they greet you with Cold towel, tea and herbs. We went to our room and it was nice. The bathroom was spacious. We had a sit out balcony in our room and the view was just fantastic.

The spa was closed very early on the day we arrived and I didn't bother to check out the next day. It was closed by 5 pm!!! They is a small golf area to play and they provided cards and monopoly to play in the room. They had a small play area for kids.

The breakfast buffet was nothing great. We then proceeded for our bird watching at 10:00 am. The walk was beautiful but we could not see any birds. You happen to see them only at the 6:30 am walk. The guide was very patient and the walk ended by visiting the garden in the hotel.

The only thing we missed during our stay was dining at the railway carriage restaurant. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely stay here if I happen to go to Nuwara Eliya again.

When we arrived at the Tea Factory Hotel we were immediately given various herbs to eat & a blessing spot put on your head. They did not like it when we refused to eat the herbs. We were offered cold tea but no other refreshment.
We were shown our room, which was basic, and told that there was a heater on the wall & blankets in the cupboard in case we were cold. I was wearing a strapless dress at the time because of the heat. There was no air conditioning or fan in our room. Although it is the cooler part of the island they do not appreciate that we have come from a relatively cool island so find Sri Lank very hot.
The Hotel was in the middle of a tea plantation which took for ever & a day to reach with the same again the following day upon our departure. There was no entertainment at all in the evening & being it was so remote there was nothing to do but watch the tv in your room. Very noisy hotel, no soundproofing between rooms or floors.

Room tip: I dont know if there was one

I travelled round Sri Lanka with my sister on holiday and this was our third hotel (of 4). I had read the reviews on TA before booking so was aware the hotel was a long way out of Nuwara Eliya and the access road was going to be long and poor. We booked for 1 night and we were greeted at the door and immediately surrounded by staff each with a different aim: one wanted to give us a welcome drink; another a cold wet towel; another a tour of the railway carriage dining experience; while another wanted to give us information about the hotel; and another wanted to check us in! We felt thoroughly hassled and they could at least have waited for us to sit down in the reception area before offering us all these things. And after a long, wet drive from Kandy all we really wanted to do was check in and go to our room.
Hotel plus points: Views of the surrounding hills; English-style gardens and tea plantations with birds and wildlife; nice bar area; from the outside it looks like any other tea factory in the area; the building itself is amazing as in many aspects it is exactly as it was (industrial style but at the same time sensitively converted); working engines area operated at specified times of the day; separate vegetarian menu (the only one we encountered throughout our stay in Sri Lanka).
Hotel negative points: Only one restaurant (not counting the railway carriage which was attached) and it had a fairly basic buffet at breakfast (only with difficulty met our dietary requirements); service was bizarre in the restaurant at dinner - one chef came to ask us how were our soups after the bowls were put down in front of us and before we even lifted our spoons; and so the meal continued with at least 15 approaches by various waiters to ask us if our meal was good – all these interruptions during the course of a 70-minute meal consisting of two courses (we could not bear to stay any longer and felt so hassled by the staff that we could not get out of there fast enough). The coffee at breakfast was undrinkable; the breakfast options at the buffet barely met our dietary needs and the baked beans were cold (the chef seemed flustered when I complained about this, but did nothing); the access road (already mentioned) was long and with a poor road surface full of potholes, which made reaching and leaving the hotel uncomfortable (but nowhere near as bad as Amaya Hills in Kandy).
Room plus points: kettle in room; nice view of gardens and the surrounding area; heating; hot water; clean bed linen; comfortable with two comfy chairs, fruit basket; carpeted room floor; plenty of hanging space in the wardrobe.
Room negative points: old style (CRT) television; strange situation of bath next to a clear glass window so had to remain covered with a drawn curtain.
Despite our bad experiences in the restaurant, the positives at this hotel far outweighed the negatives and I would definitely stay here again if I was in the area. I would recommend it to others. It is feasible to visit for several days and there is a spa (not tried) as well as other activities such as hiking in the area. It would be suitable for a short (long weekend) break since the seaplane service is available from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya. The area has a much cooler climate than other areas of Sri Lanka we visited. We found it fascinating with crops grown such as tea, leeks, potatoes and carrots.
I booked this hotel through Booking.com and was pleased with their service (first time user), although it was a little confusing as I was not sure from the confirmation email if I had actually paid in advance or not.

Room tip: All rooms have excellent views

Located amongst the tea growing area of Kandapola, near Nuwara Eliya, the hotel is unlike any other in Sri Lanka. The journey to the hotel is a long way and the last four kilometers is up a dirt track that is very bumpy and laborious.
My overall opinion of my one night stay at the hotel is that it is a long journey with not much to do when you arrive. Although I am glad that I got to see the hotel (with its working machinery), I didn't consider the effort to get there to be worth it.
The hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly. The rooms are petit, but have all the mod-cons including a heater if the temperature drops cold. I recall reading that all the rooms are accessable to disabled patrons; while this is true, the bath/shower are not suitable for those people who cannot climb in-and-out of the tub or cannot stand as there is a large step and narrow gap to overcome.
The food at the hotel is not exceptional, but is of a good standard with some selection.

Room tip: Not well located for attractions

This Hotel is amazing! If you like peace and quiet and the countryside rather than busy towns then you will love it. The Hotel is a converted tea factory set in working tea plantations. The building has retained a lot of the original features from when it was used as a Tea factory. Inside are the old steam engines and machinery which are set working each day. The building is full of light. I felt like I was back in colonial times taking tea after my long journey. The Hotel is full of history.

People have commented on the poor state of the roads to get there. To me that just adds to the charm. If you want to see the real Sri Lanka it is worth going off the beaten track. I was on honeymoon and we couldn't wait to get out of the busy town of Nuwara Eliya and up into the hills.

We were given a great welcome when we arrived with a special tea. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. There was a real attention to detail. Our slice of cake for afternoon tea was silver service.

The food was excellent. We enjoyed the buffet with plenty of choice. We also had the a la carte meal in the old railway carriage. It was fabulous. Yes you have to pay more but it was well worth the money. The food was served by the waiter dressed up as a railway guard. As a local man he was very interesting to talk to. The service was faultless.

People have said there is nothing to do. I disagree. If you like nature and the outdoors it is an amazing place. We did one of the nature Walks with the Hotel Guide. He was very knowledgable. A delightful man who has worked there for years. We were able to see tea picking at close quarters.I also dressed up as a tea picker and picked and processed my own tea in the Hotels mini tea factory. Great fun!

We only stayed two nights. I would have loved to relax and take in the views and atmosphere for a few more days. Felt very chilled and relaxed staying here.
