“Nightmare road but a great hotel at the end of it!”
Reviewed 25 September 2011

A really novel hotel, great welcome too! But a nightmare road getting to it - the hotel really needs to improve the road, our driver nearly ripped his tyres getting there! The hotel was quieter than the previous hotels we had stayed in on the tour, but that just added to the ambience. We went for a quick walk round the grounds when we arrived, checking out the mini tea factory and the gardens - the staff were lovely and keen to show the plants and animals on the grounds. We had taken the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya - we would highly recommend this trip! The tea was amazing - I changed my whole opinion on tea whilst here! The weather was a shock to the system - it was like being back at home and the only hotel on the tour where they show you how to work the heating rather than the air conditioning! All in all a pleasant stay.

This is a great place to stay in a hill-station and do nothing!!! It has a unique charm being a real Tea Factory before restoring it into a hotel and you can feel and smell tea everywhere. A delight for a true tea lover. Rooms are tastefully refurbished. Food is excellent and the staff is courteous and friendly. Although located in a bit remote location away from the city, that itself adds to the charm of this hotel.

Room Tip: There are a few rooms which are overlooking the huge chimney of this ancient tea factory. Better to...

It's quite a trek to get there, but it truly is a breathtaking view. The hotel looks quite stale and modern from the outside, but inside it has plenty warmth and charm. The service is fantastic. There is nothing much around, but it's the kind of place to get away from everything for some peace and quiet. The food and the restaurant is good(not outstanding)

We stayed one night as part of a tour of Sri Lanka organised by Aitken Spence, the company which owns the hotel. It is the shell of an old tea factory, restored brilliantly with some very modern design. It's 2000 metres up, so a bit chilly, but there are heaters in every room. The views are spectacular. The service and atmosphere were outstanding. We had dinner in a restored railway carriage in the hotel, which may sound silly, but was very good indeed! A 6 course gourmet meal (TOP quality food) for about $45, which is a lot by Sri Lankan standards, but you'd pay triple that in, say, Australia for the same meal. An excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony

A beautiful building that has been converted into a very original Hotel. The surrounding views are wonderful ie, tea plantations and hills. The food is great and the tea is superb, the rooms are good but simple. But the whole experience is worth it, you can feel the stress of life simply roll away as you enter the Hotel. Take a book and just relax outside whilst drinking tea or go on the nature walk, just take it easy...

Room Tip: Any, all have good views. The gym is rubbish though:-)...

Great hotel as others have said.

Great rooms and views. The food was really special and all the staff were brilliant.

OK there isnt too much to do once there but for 2 nights it was a really relaxing time. They do nature walks and tea visits but with nothing around you for 4 miles I wouldnt say you want any longer here.

Dont think I would go back but I'm glad I've visited it.

The uniqueness of the hotel surely made the trip worth while. The conservation effort of the hotel was well worth while and rooms are a stylish mix of new and old. The road to the hotel is in a perilous state and every day trip starts with a cumbersome 30 minutes trip downhill. The Spa doesn't live up to its own marketing and the staff in the hotel is generally arrogant or ignorant at best. Every handshake seems to cost extra and the game of pool is rudely interrupted because 'the hour is up' - no matter if you have only 5 minutes to go or not. The dinner dress code for full length trousers is taken ad absurdum by people in dirty, worn down track suits.
