This hotel is still in the colonial style set in the hills and tea plantations. Excellent accomadation superb food with excellent service set in some of the most beautiful gardens you will find anywhere. If you make the effort to visit this wonderful country then you stay at the grand, you won't regret it

Dear Guest, Thanks for your kind words. We are extremely happy to learn that you were able to enjoy your stay with us, specially the colonial ambience which we try so hard to preserve. In our endeavor to offer more to our guests, we have lined up many value additions to the Grand experience, starting with a 30 minute Yoga and stretching exercise at 7am each morning, absolutely free for house guests and the Grand Thai manned by Chef Boonsong . As always our focus will continue to be on improving our customer care, to be on par with the best of the best. Our Nature program which is growing in popularity, is another option that is well received by our guests. We would also invite you to tell us of any special requests you will need during your stay with us. All this is put together to make your next stay with us longer and even more enjoyable. We do hope your stay in Nuwara Eliya was a good one and hope to see you again. Best wishes from all of us at the Grand. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

The most spectacular thing about this hotel is its gardens, full of flowers in full bloom. the hotel has an English look with a grand facade.the Indian Restaurant located in its premises I was told is very good but we couldn't get a place due to the rush. Located close to the city centre and a foot market, selling fruits and groceries. The evenings were chilly and one needed light woollens to feel comfortable. The rooms were without fans and air conditioners.Overall a very comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms overlooking the gardens.

The Grand hotel the most talk about hotel in Nuwara Eliya. I really had my hopes high when i went there, I think mainly because i have my expectation set really high. The Place looks grand and nice, i guess that's comes with the old heritage it has. But the hotel needs definite refurbishment. The lobby is over crowded with sofas which i thought was very bad. The service was great friendly and nice staff. Tried the Grand Thai restaurant, will definitely go back. The welcome drink was a Vanilla Tea with Jaggery amazing, but the rooms were horrible, worn out windows, dirty carpets very ordinary room. As i said definitely needs refurbishment, management really has to look in to it.

This hotel was booked as part of a private tour, unfortunately the room we were given had three beds and we only needed two, hence it was cramped.
The public rooms were lovely, fresh flowers every where & the grand piano was played from time to time, the gardens were also impressive. We ate at the indian restaurant which was very good, however we would have liked to also use the main dining room on one of the evenings but unfortunately were unable to do so before 9pm which was late for us as we were to be out sight seeing early each day. The indian restaurant was very nice, the service was excellent and the atmosphere good.

Our third pit stop in Sri Lanka and we were really looking out for this hotel in the "Little England" of Sri Lanka. The hotel is reminiscent of the glorious past and lives up to being a colonial masterpiece. The rooms are small though and the toilets are a bit run down, carpets too are old. On the brighter side the choice of dining and drinking options are great. The breakfast spread is really huge and fabulous. If you want to relive the past, then it's worth a stay here. Oh yeah, the service was excellent!!

Coming to Nuwara Eliya and staying at the grand has become a tradition for the past decade or more and this time was no exception, and it was our 5th visit to the hotel. Although many new and more modern hotels have come up in Nuwara Eliya, the grand remains a firm favourite with seasoned travelers like us.

Turning into the driveway from the approach road you are greeted by immaculately maintained lawns and flower beds which I am sure takes the breath away from a first time visitor to this hotel. Though most prefer to lounge in the front garden it is actually the back and the side gardens that offer much more tranquility and serenity. The grand regularly wins the award for the best garden in Nuwara Eliya and it is easy to see why.

We stayed this time in the Governor's wing or the old wing and I must agree, that the hotel needs to spruce up the rooms and put them in order if they are to have the regulars coming back. While the old world charm of the wooden floors and the period furniture retains its allure there is no escaping the fact that the hotel needs to seriously look at making the rooms more organized and up to date.

The food as always was very good and well prepared. However the almost identical breakfast menu was repeated everyday over all four days we stayed and by the fourth day we knew the menu by memory. Dinner was better where there were a few more variants.

The staff is friendly and helpful this helps greatly to improve the overall stay experience of any hotel.

Black Velvet the band playing some old favourites added a nice touch to the dinner service , and to their credit they were not overly loud and were easy on the ear.

The Grand Pastry shop where you can buy a really good selection of buns, pastries and cakes each for under Rs.100 each was a real surprise. The same would cost you much more in Colombo. They were all fresh and tasted really nice.

I sincerely hope that the management takes the views provided by the many visitors on this site constructively and works towards enhancing the experience provided to them.

All in all the Grand Hotel is a beautiful property that has over the years provided refuge to many a traveler to indulge in the old world charm of a bygone era and will continue to do so for many a year to come.

Room Tip: Rooms in the old wing have a lot more space.

Came here for one day stayed one more.
Pros
wonderfully maintained a 125 years old heritage
Suggested rooms 256, new extension, has a door to the adjacent 257... great for big families. Also rooms 309 or 310 these are part of old building.
Proximity to city and golf course.
Children play ground
Award winning garden
Cons
Nothing but a bit pricy but you can avoid this by availing off peak season or booking earlier.
