“Grand Old Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

We chose this hotel because of it's history. It is a beautiful old hotel. Room was basic but certainly adequate. It was lovely being in the cool of the mountains and able to open our windows to view the beautiful gardens. The hotel is an easy stroll to town. We had an early departure as we wanted to hike to World's End and the hotel arranged for a packed breakfast for us to take with us-much appreciated.

Dear Guest, Our sincere thanks for your review. We are extremely happy to learn that you were able to enjoy your stay with us. In our endeavor to offer more to our guests, we have lined up many value additions to the Grand experience, starting with a 30 minute Yoga and stretching exercise at 7am each morning, absolutely free for house guests and the Grand Thai manned by Chef Boonsong . As always our focus will continue to be on improving our customer care, to be on par with the best of the best. Our Nature program which is growing in popularity, is another option that is well received by our guests. We would also invite you to tell us of any special requests you will need during your stay with us. All this is put together to make your next stay with us longer and even more enjoyable. We do hope your stay in Nuwara Eliya was a good one and hope to see you again. Best wishes from all of us at the Grand. Sincerely, Resident Manager.

We stayed here just for 1 night during our tour trough Sri Lanka. This was the best stay of our 2 week tour! Beautiful gardens and lounge, colonial style and feel. Very nice, warm welcome. We could sit down in the lounge, got a welcome cup of tea, no standing or waiting around. We got an upgrade to a suite. Huge room with dining table, lounge, make-up table and 3 beds. The room was clean, everything worked but was a little bit outdated, but hey, the outdated thing is in fact the theme of the hotel. I didn't expect anything else. We also got a fruit plate and chocolates in the room.
Nuwara Eliya and also the hotel were a little bit too crowdy for us, but that was because of the local new year celebrations going on there. Our tour operator didn't tell us that april is so busy for new year celebrations. We expected a quite mountain village kind of thing... But joining the locals and their festivities were also very nice to do. Some smal minors: the provided mosquito repellent didn't fit in the socket (didn't see any mosquitos so no problem), the showerhead was not removable (horrible when you have to rince very long hair), this was the only hotel on our tour that didn't have a pool (we didn't miss it but our 7 year old didl).

Entering the premises of this property was a treat to the eyes. The array of blooming flowers of all hues and well manicured lawns were welcome any visitor. On entering the premises one was reminded of the colonial style of living. Surprisingly one did not enter a lobby of any hotel but were made to sit in a lounge with a welcome drink while the formalities were being completed by the helpful staff.

The rooms were ornate and one had a good view of the garden from the window. Staying there was a comfort.

This premises was the only one where one could walk around the building on all four sides and treat ones eyes with the colourful flowers. Shrubs were trimmed in the shape of animals and were a delight to watch. At one of the premise was place of worship of all faith.

The attached washrooms need to be improved as the faucets were not working properly.

Room Tip: All rooms provide a view of the lovely garden maintained.

The Grand Hotel was absolutely stunning. Like stepping back in time, the hotel so lives up to its name and the staff simply could not do enough. Our holiday was to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary and we were treated to a lovely cake and framed photograph to remember the occasion. We ate at the Thai restaurant on site and the food was just delicious, and again the staff friendly, helpful and courteous. The tea room is a treat, try the Italian almond tea with carrot cake - I bought some to bring home it was so good. The room itself was a little faded splendour but it was still lovely. Can't recommend it highly enough - would love to go back.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the gardens

The most spectacular thing about this hotel is its gardens, full of flowers in full bloom. the hotel has an English look with a grand facade.the Indian Restaurant located in its premises I was told is very good but we couldn't get a place due to the rush. Located close to the city centre and a foot market, selling fruits and groceries. The evenings were chilly and one needed light woollens to feel comfortable. The rooms were without fans and air conditioners.Overall a very comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms overlooking the gardens.

The Grand hotel the most talk about hotel in Nuwara Eliya. I really had my hopes high when i went there, I think mainly because i have my expectation set really high. The Place looks grand and nice, i guess that's comes with the old heritage it has. But the hotel needs definite refurbishment. The lobby is over crowded with sofas which i thought was very bad. The service was great friendly and nice staff. Tried the Grand Thai restaurant, will definitely go back. The welcome drink was a Vanilla Tea with Jaggery amazing, but the rooms were horrible, worn out windows, dirty carpets very ordinary room. As i said definitely needs refurbishment, management really has to look in to it.
