For someone living in a big city this hotel and its room gave the impression of a haunted house at once but once you settle down in a couple of hours you start admiring how they have kept the place. The rooms were very spacious and had an uppder deck as well much to the amusement of my kid. Hotel is just a 10 min walk away from the town so everything is within reach. The restaurant in the hotel was nice but there are good places to eat in the main market just 15 minutes walk away. Nuwara Eliya is a nice, quiet town but my sleep got disturbed due to some hindu festival going on in the town which i assume ended somewhere near the hotel at around 1 am in the morning. Cant blame the hotel for that. Though at the time of the check out they charged me for the a water bottle from the minibar which i didnt consume but one must keep a margin for a couple of incidents while travelling.

OK - if you want designer chic boutique this may not be the hotel for you. If you fancy staying in a building which reverberates with the story of the hill country this is for you.

We only had one night here and were upgraded to a suite at the very end of the upper corridor. 4 poster bed was the focus of the room, nice period decor and spotlessly clean. As mentioned elsewhere the rooms do get a little chilly in the early hours - but after a couple of weeks in the sticky heat we found this refreshing.

Food was of a very high quality, even if the range of choice was not as wide as in some hotels. The dining room, and in particular the ceiling, is a masterpiece of construction from an era gone bye. Service was prompt and friendly. Afternoon high tea on the verranda was scrumptious as well.

The location is ideal for a walk into town - 10 mins easy stroll into the main part of town.

There is a history of the hotel on display, and we found it fascinating that the building was an RandR centre in WW2, and that the survivors of the sinking of the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes by the Japanese were brought directly to the hotel for recouperation. Its that kind of history which really sold me on the place - the fantastic service, good food and comfy rooms just cemented our view.

An excellent hotel. Very quirky and a trip back to colonial Sri Lanka. The decor is very 1920's / 1930's and so is the manner of the staff. Very attentive, very helpful. Yes, it is cold here, compared to the lower parts of the country and the coast, but what do you expect at 6,000ft plus ? Upgraded to a suite at no extra cost (I don't know how this happened, but I suspect it was the work of our excellent driver). Pleasant walk into town, make sure you check out the sights, sounds and smells of th emarket by th ebus station, particularly the dried fish section at the far end !!
Only one minor complaint .... dinner felt a little rushed, but then on the plus side, it allowed more time for a post dinner drink in the bar.

This is a well preserved victorian hotel in the tea growing area of Sri Lanka. At first glance it looks like it needs modernising but you soon succumb to its old fashioned charm. Our creaky room was quite cold but an old electric fire soon removed the chill. At night the staff even put hot water bottles in your bed (it goes down to 5 degrees C). The buzzing restaurant is full of ambiance. The waiters are some of the most attentive and enthusiastic we have ever met and the food's not bad either.

Whilst the place may not be to everyone'e taste, if you want to imagine what it must have been like to live in the colonies than this is a close as you can get.

The hotel provides a great stay. You travel through the nature to reach there. However, the location of this hotel takes you a little away from the nature. But thumbs up to the rooms that provide for a quality stay.

We stayed 2 nights at St. Andrews hotel from February 1-3 2011. The hotel is good, restaurant is fine and rooms are clean and OK. Ask for a room on the upper floors as we stayed on the ground floor with no view what so ever.

The hotel is a bit boring and the same is the city of Nuwara Eliya. So make sure you have planned trips from here. The hotel is also very cold as it is not heated so expect to wear extra clothes.
