“It was like staying in a piece of history”
Reviewed 16 May 2011

A very quaint hotel reminiscent of the colonial days of Sri Lanka. With lovely terrace and lawn and garden furniture, you feel you just want to have a cup of tea outside (bit bizarre that you're given soup upon arrival).

The floor in reception is very historical, as is the snooker room - very old.

The rooms are cosy with an old fashioned feel.

The food was amazing in the restaurant with fine dining.

Excellent choice. Friendly staff. Wonderful surprise to find hot water bottles in each bed every night. Good with two kids, as they had a loft area with two single beds and we were 'downstairs'. Nice grounds to walk around in. Restaurant so so, a bit dark and glum. Street dogs were barking at night.

This hotel is very quirky - it reminded us of the hotel from Fawlty Towers! However, we found it charming. The rooms were quaint but had everything you needed (the floor sloped to the window too), the gardens were very impressive and we enjoyed our stay here. We stayed for one night, which was fine. No hotels in Nuwara Eliya have swimming pools - it does get chilly at night - so much so that the management put hot water bottles in the bed whilst we were in the restaurant - it was the best laugh we had had all day. The food in the restaurant is first class however the service was abysmal. We had to ask for a wine list 3 times and had had our first course and very nearly our main before the wine arrived. The wine was expensive too, but it is in all hotels in Sri Lanka. This hotel was fine for one night but no longer. However I think most people staying in Nuwara Eliya only stay for one night

The hotel is located just beyond the town, adjacent a golf course. The rooms facing the front gardens face town, so the noise from local temples does reach your room.
The rooms are cleaned daily. The bathrooms are lovely. A kettle with tea/coffee is provided.
The food is expensive.
A 10% service charge + 12% govt tax is added to the final bill. I knew about the 10% but the additional 12% came as a shocker. The prices of beer and cocktails were steep; to attract another 22% is amazing.

It's not really interesting to stay in the city center. The hotel needs to be renovated, rooms are dark, noisy and not clean, smelling tobacco. welcome is not friendly at all... We didn't even want to try the restaurant...

For someone living in a big city this hotel and its room gave the impression of a haunted house at once but once you settle down in a couple of hours you start admiring how they have kept the place. The rooms were very spacious and had an uppder deck as well much to the amusement of my kid. Hotel is just a 10 min walk away from the town so everything is within reach. The restaurant in the hotel was nice but there are good places to eat in the main market just 15 minutes walk away. Nuwara Eliya is a nice, quiet town but my sleep got disturbed due to some hindu festival going on in the town which i assume ended somewhere near the hotel at around 1 am in the morning. Cant blame the hotel for that. Though at the time of the check out they charged me for the a water bottle from the minibar which i didnt consume but one must keep a margin for a couple of incidents while travelling.

OK - if you want designer chic boutique this may not be the hotel for you. If you fancy staying in a building which reverberates with the story of the hill country this is for you.

We only had one night here and were upgraded to a suite at the very end of the upper corridor. 4 poster bed was the focus of the room, nice period decor and spotlessly clean. As mentioned elsewhere the rooms do get a little chilly in the early hours - but after a couple of weeks in the sticky heat we found this refreshing.

Food was of a very high quality, even if the range of choice was not as wide as in some hotels. The dining room, and in particular the ceiling, is a masterpiece of construction from an era gone bye. Service was prompt and friendly. Afternoon high tea on the verranda was scrumptious as well.

The location is ideal for a walk into town - 10 mins easy stroll into the main part of town.

There is a history of the hotel on display, and we found it fascinating that the building was an RandR centre in WW2, and that the survivors of the sinking of the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes by the Japanese were brought directly to the hotel for recouperation. Its that kind of history which really sold me on the place - the fantastic service, good food and comfy rooms just cemented our view.
