“Good Hotel”
Reviewed 18 January 2013

we stayed 2 nights here in Jan 2013. It is good hotel. well maintained. Walking distance to Market, 5 mins walk.
The Rooms are large and well maintained. the furniture is nice. Bathroom is good neat and clean
The staff is helpful and speaks good english.
The Break fast is Ok. We found BF in other Sri Lanka hotels better. The restaurant is dimly lit. it does not get direct sunlight as well.
We did not have meals here as we did not like the dimly lit restaurant and quality of BF.
walk to market for better and cheaper food. Grand restaurant is 15 mins walk it has lovely Indian food but is gets full by 6.15 pm for Dinner. There after you have to wait for 1 hour or so to get a place to sit.

Room Tip: First Floor Rooms facing market are best.

We have just spend the night at this hotel as part of a four day trip around Sri Lanka. We are celebrating our honeymoon so they upgraded our room to the "gem suite" which was lovely. It's the first hotel on our trip where we felt & were treated like true honeymooners. They came in a decorated the bed with flowers, fruit plater and reserved us a table in the restaurant. The staff couldn't have been more attentive.
The hotel felt like we were in the English country side with beautiful gardens to walk around, cosy fires, tea rooms and even a quirky pub! The restaurant served a variety of foods including mash potatoe and beef pie with a soft pastry top.

The only downside would be that it was really cold as its in the hills so the small heater didn't quite do the job of heating the big suite. I cant speak on behalf of the other rooms but alot of the reveiws have commented on the hotel looking shabby I would agree that the corridors could be better looked after but got to say it sort of adds to the charm and rustic look. It is at the end of the day an old hotel and we felt we had stepped back in time which added to the experience. All in all a delightful stay.

It is truly gratifying to read through your review and your appreciation towards old colonial mansions with fire places and the very best of English cuisine.

We really liked this hotel Yes, it's a bit old fashioned and a bit shabby in places but has lots of character and very friendly staff. Our room was spacious, light and bright, spotlessly clean, with very comfy beds. The bathroom was large and had a great shower.
Food was okay. On Christmas Eve we were serenaded by the staff singing carols. The Christmas gala dinner wasn't bad, the Christmas cake rather good, but Father Christmas in a white mask was very scary indeed!
Without exception the staff were cheerful, efficient and helpful.

We stayed here for one night at the beginning of Jan '13 when it's a bit cool in the mornings and evenings. The temperature is between 15-17C. St.Andrew's Hotel is a lovely hotel with a long history behind.

The location is great, right in town and approx. 15-20 minutes drive to a well-known Tea Factory Mackwoods Fine Tea, where you can do a tea factory tour with guide and do some shopping for a good quality tea.

The set menu dinner is great with reasonable price and you have for each course a few choices to choose from and the taste of each dish is delicious. The food is represented beautifully. What I like here is a basket of variety of warm bread that they serve at the dinner table.

There is a huge billiard room in British style and also a nice fireplace in a lounge where you can enjoy a drink after dinner here.

The room we stayed in was a suite and so it's kind of a duplex room with a second floor for an extra bed area where you can go up there by a small stair. If you are a family with 2 kids, this room is suitable for you.

The room size is big with a nice old wooden floor. There is an electric heater in the room as well.

We took nearly 7 hours to drive from Colombo But the journey was certainly worth the long long road trip. We were greeted with hot soup on arrival. Service was friendly. Loved the Old World feel of the hotel. We stayed over the Christmas period, there were carollers, lighting of the bonfires followed by the traditional Xmas dinner which was delicious.
The room was spacious and comfortable. However we didnt get any face or hand towels when we arrived. Also the iron is shared between a few rooms and maybe even housekeeping department.
This was all made up by the excellent treatment and service from the staff esp Mr. Sedanka, Ms Priyanka and Mr Rodrigues.

However I believe this establishment is in need of refurbishment as some of the rooms look dated. Especially when compared to other Jetwing establishments.

Room Tip: Choose one on the ground floor with direct access to the garden.

We loved this place... We loved the character, the history, the large rooms, the fireplace, the restaurant, the billard room -- all of it!

With it being Christmas, we felt the room rate was fare and a good value. Additionally, the staff was slammed in the restaurant when we went for dinner. We chose not to do the buffet, but a la carte instead. There was a minor hiccup or two, but for the most part, considering how busy they were and how we decided to go off the menu, it all went well. And the food was great!

I've not stayed in a Jetwings hotel before, but will definitely consider staying in one again after this experience.

We had a very warm welcome with a shot of hot soup and hot towels on arrival. Yes it is cold up there! The hotel staff were very friendly.
The Lounge is a bit tired, but you'll find an amazing library hidden there with books in english, french, dutch and german, some of them really old. Sadly the books are just stuffed into an old cabinet and you need to ask for the key at reception.
There is also a bar with fire place (nice for pre or after dinner drinks), a billiard room which opens in the evening (the extra large table was brought from India according to hotel history board), a few shops and a restaurant. The restaurant is windowless and quite dull. Guests have to step down into a lower room, which is set up with various buffets for starters, salads, mains and dessert plus a live cooking station. The selection was quite impressive, unfortunately the taste just average. The restaurant staff was also not very attentive.
Our room was large yet cosy with a lounge and reading light, heater and loose tea as you would expect in this place.
Check in and out was very smooth.
Overall satisfactory for a one night stay. The hotel has lots of stairways and steps throughout.
