This is a lovely hotel in a fabulous location in a nice town: our room was fine, large, with excellent bathroom. Only issue with the room was the Grand Old Duke of York upstairs, whose marching round the room resounded throught the wooden floor, but you get that in old hotels all over the world.
If you do stay, try and avoid peak times in the dining/ breakfast room, as it is too small for the number of guests. 7:30pm dining was not the pleasant experience it might have been.
The big issue is with overbooking: we were travelling in a party of 10, and they tried to bump us into another hotel, which our tour leaders refused (we were on a Jetwings tour). On the second day I arrived back at the hotel to find a man in reception being informed 'Your reservation is wrong, you are booked into hotel x'. I didn't wait to hear the outcome.
An hour later my wife and I were having tea when a couple came in, in high dudgeon, sat down and demanded to speak to the manager. When someone appeared (not sure if it was the manager) the guest produced documentation with his name, the manager's name, date, time, reservation details, proof of payment etc and demanded the room he had reserved. He was informed that the room was not available, and they would be accommodated in a hotel elsewhere in town. The guy demanded a) a refund of their reservation money and b) free accommodation at the alternative hotel. Again we left before the issue was resolved.
When we returned from an afternoon wander around the town, a coach party was checking in: I leave you to draw your own conclusions.
So, a nice place to stay, but beware of double booking. When our leaders enquired about the issues the next morning, they were told 'it was the fault of head office in Colombo'. Hmmm.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for the detailed review and we are happy to know that you enjoyed the colonial atmosphere of our hotel in the hills. We will most definitely look into the areas you have mentioned and further discuss this with relevant team members for further improvement. Furthermore you will be pleased to note that we have already designed an extension to the main restaurant that will be under construction soon.

We are incredibly sorry for the inconvenience you faced due to the hotel being overbooked, not only were you part of the issue but had to witness other guests facing the same problem. We do understand that such issues are not warranted when on vacation, however we assure you this is not an everyday occurrence. We are looking into streamlining and rectifying the system to ensure such inconveniences will be avoided in the future.

Again, we apologize and hope you will come back to Jetwing St. Andrew’s once the renovations are complete.

Sincerely,

Upul Leukebandara
General Manager

We stayed at this hotel as part of a tour of Sri Lanka. We had a warm welcome from the manager and went to our room our bags following shortly. The room was very old fashioned but very nice at the same time. It was clean which was the most important thing. The shower room was left wanting in that there was nowhere to put anything and the decoration looked half finished. Having said that the water was hot! There was a heater in the room which we used as later in their afternoon the heavens opened and it was quite cold. Also a blanket was provided, again this was used. We also made use of the bar and lounge areas where the very friendly staff lit log fires. Food was excellent as was the service. A great choice from the buffet of both Sri Lankan and western food. We wandered into the town and enjoyed nosying around the shops. Everyone was very friendly. We did have a couple of power cuts but these only lasted a few seconds - it was very stormy. Not much to do at the hotel so best to use it as a base for exploring.

Everything about this classic hotel lived up to its reputation and Jetwing are to be congratulated for maintaining its historic character and fittings, including vegetable garden and wetland, but with modern levels of service and plumbing!. The garden, veranda and sitting rooms all pleasant places to relax. The only negative limited space in the dining room when the hotel is full hotel - staff tried hard to give good service, but tables too close together with people moving to and from the excellent quality buffet. Tip - arrive early if staying during peak season!
Reception very helpful but special thanks to Mr Chandika Samarakoon who arranged an excellent car transfer to our next destination after we were told a car not possible.

Room Tip: Wooden floors so an upstairs room preferable (no footsteps overhead) and one facing the front, or on...

We were in the hotel in the high season and there were lods of guests. My 2nd visit to the hotel and this time we had to wait for more than 1 hour till they place our evening tea order. Daniel is an experienced steward and he did his job well and didnt forget to have a nice conversation with the guests to whom he served. But need more staff to the F & B Department.

This colonial style hotel was a fitting place from which to discover the local tea plantations. The twin room had a cosy, nursery-room feel to it: beds with wooden white frames (amazing pillows), a matching dressing table, a mantel, and nice big armchairs. The bathroom, in contrast, was stylish and modern; though the one shower I attempted was cold. The room also lacked a bar fridge.

Service at the front desk was friendly and efficient, and it was nice to be welcomed with a shot of spicy pumpkin soup (on a cold day). The communal family room had an open fire and library - very homely.

Service in the restaurant, however, was shambolic. Waiters couldn't cope with requests 'a la carte' at the same time as running the buffet (a request for some soup was awkwardly received and then came out late). They were brusque, confused and inefficient. Clearly a case of terrible staff management. That said, the food was great.

Note: If you're lured by the jewellery in the hotel shop, I'd advise that you shop around in the main street. The man who works in-house is happy to do a hard bargain - I managed 50% off - but range in town is wider and cheaper even still.

Nice hotel for those who love British Colonial style of living, just not my kind. Location was good a little away from the market place so felt private. Rooms were good, but looked old and ill-lit.

We were there for the new years, there was so much food and too many people that it felt crammed. And we paid special price for new years, not worth it! I just wish these hotels stop this stupidity of charging for new year/gala dinner, etc. The food cooked in such huge quantities is usually pretty bad! To give them some credit, the food from the menu was not that bad. Do try the the veg burger and fries. We loved it!

Room Tip: Try to get a room upstairs.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to leave behind some thoughts about your stay at Jetwing St. Andrew’s on Trip Advisor. We apologize for the inconvenience caused, however charging a supplement for Christmas and New Year’s dinner occurs in most hotels in Sri Lanka as there is a much greater effort taken to change the menu and provide a wider variety for these special occasions. Your comments are well noted and will be put to positive and constructive development.

Looking forward to seeing you at Jetwing St. Andrew’s in the very near future.

The hotel is in a good location, spacious with lot of greenery around and a heritage building. The staff are curious and helpful. A little more focus is required to maintain the cleanliness especially the smell in rest rooms. The exhaust fans are not switched on continuously. Overall experience is good.

Room Tip: choose rooms in above floors with front view
