“Clean but shabby”
Reviewed 1 May 2010

Our room had seen better days and when we first arrived I felt a bit uncomfortable-but the room was clean and perfectly safe. The room was very cheap and good value but to be honest next time I probably spend a bit more cash. The owners were very friendly but weren't around when we checked out. Staying at the National gave us a 10 % discount at the fantastic Italian Restaurant next door - which we would highly recommend for dinner.

We stayed for two nights in a reasonably spacious but rather run down room. I feel the place is in need of refurbishment. Ok, we managed - but this is definitely one of the more grubby places we've stayed in our time. Plus points were - there was 24 hour coffee available in reception, also we found it convenient to make use of their laundry.

As everyone knows CO is knows as colorful colorado and mesa-verde is the best place for vacation but as its tourist place it definately gonna kill with all expenses like room rent.

Unfortunately we visited National 9 inn to check the rates and rooms and after looking all we got shocked and moreover as suprised package with that was room Service, cleanliness and i heard about the politness of indian and on that day I felt that , i would really loved to say they were really nice to us.

with the rate of 50$ per night we got microwave , refrigerator , awesome service , free coffee , soft pillow .

Because the other hotels in Cortez were either pretty expensive or had no vacancy we chose the National 9. According to other reviews this hotel looks worse from the outside than from the inside. We don't need a 5 star hotel, so we figured this would work for us. Well...it didn't.

For the first time in our life (!) we checked out just hours after we checked in. We had a 2 queen room (no.8), in the left corner of the property, close to the hotel laundry. A big (broken?) washing machine and two old chairs were standing in the corner, just outside our door. The lock of our door looked like it wouldn't take much force to get the door open without a key. There were lots of stains (coffee? hot chocolate?) on the wall and on the carpet (looked like dried oatmeal). One of the towels was brown/grey like somebody washed his feet with it and it hadn't been replaced. The pillows had stains, too.
The hotel replaced the dirty towel and pillowcase when we asked them to, but when I opened the curtains I accidentally looked inside the airconditioning... from above I saw dirt, dirt, dirt, hair, an old spoon, cigarettes etc. I also noticed that one of the sheets was so worn out that it looked brownish. That's when we decided to leave, even though we had no alternative by that time.

Outside I spoke to other guests who stayed at the same hotel for a couple of days. They told me that their room was okay. Maybe we just had the worst room of the hotel??

When I explained our 'problem' at the front desk the owner told me that the room was not as clean as it should be 'because we checked in early'... I don't think so. The towels and linnens had been replaced.

The good thing: The hotel refunded the money immediately on my credit card and we found a room in a much better hotel down the street for only $ 15 more... There were almost no hotelrooms left in Cortez, so I get the feeling that the National 9 is taking advantage of the fact that people need a room. There are not many alternatives around Cortez.

A couple of hours later we bumped into the same people that were checking in at the National 9 while I complained about our room...They also looked for another hotel after they had seen their room.

Our complaints have been so substantial that I can't imagine this was just an unlucky shot. We really don't need luxury, we just want a clean room.

Even though the staff was okay...never ever will I recommend this hotel to anyone.

We were looking for a basic motel to stay at while we were visiting Mesa Verde. We were a family of 5 with kids under 12.
The room was plenty big enough and included a sleeper sofa, fridge and micro besides the 2 queen? beds. Sheets were clean, pillows and beds good. The room smelled of bath soap--not a bad thing. Bathroom was clean. Carpet needed replacing--we kept our shoes on. Sleeper sofa had no bedding, but we had our own along in case. Fridge worked great. Didn't use the microwave. Could have used a bottle opener in the room. (Thought the old Rte. 66 type motels came equipped with those!) Air conditioner on the brink, but did work.
Kids thought the pool was dirty, but I think it was just the stuff that blew in for the day. Was clean in the morning.

We got a good night's sleep both nights that we stayed. It was quiet.

Nero's restaurant next door was great. Silver Bean coffee trailer walking distance away was great kitsch for breakfast.

After doing an extensive research over the online i booked a room at this place. I paid less than 45 dollar per night and recieved Refrigerator and microwave; both worked like new. i was in the town for business and i stayed there for a week. Room service was the best i have ever seen. comfy bed, nice pillow, and all the emenities you need. just to let other travelers know you can pay 100 dollars at high end inns and get hair dryer in you bathroom and coffee in your room, instead bring your own hair dryer and get free coffee in office and save more than 50 bucks plus get microwave and refrigerator.

We seek out these older motor inns. We enjoy their quirkiness.

The room was clean (even in the corners of the bathroom). Don't expect anything special, but your basics are well taken care of. Heater worked great. We used both the fridge and microwave, all was fine. Sheets were crisp and clean.

Wi-Fi worked great.

Just what we were looking for - A decent, warm bed & wi-fi for under $40. Perfect.
