Kelly Place
Ranked #1 of 5 Cortez B&B and Inns
Reviewed 9 July 2013

Kelly Place is situated on about 40 acres in McElmo Canyon about 11 miles from town. It's quiet, clean and friendly. The grounds include anasazi ruins and remnants of original homesteads--with a self-guided tour. The veranda is perfect for breakfast with the hummingbirds--or afternoon reading (or siesta). The hosts are knowledgeable and willing to share that. The rooms are spacious, with fridge and stove burners. Breakfasts and first rate, especially the homemade granola. Canyons of the Ancients and Hovenweep are nearby. We visited just to get away from the summer heat--but we'll return any time of the year.

Our stay was pretty much perfect.

Kelly Place is situated deep within a beautiful rock canyon (an archeologist's dream but pretty dang excellent for us mere "ooh-ahh" people, too), about 12 miles from Cortez and a mile off the main road. Definitely off the beaten track. We were glad we arrived before dark and advise others to do the same. The one-lane dirt road that leads from the main road into the compound is perfectly safe but might seem spooky if maneuvered for the first time after dark.

Our room (#9) had a beautiful view, its own balcony, and sliding glass door with no key. Other rooms do have keys and if this had been a problem for us, I'm sure the K folks would have found a way to help. We didn't ask. As was, we just locked things into a suitcase. No one comes into the rooms during the day - which we liked as we're perfectly capable of making a bed and there's no need to change linen during a 4-day stay.

The bed was comfortable, the bedding and towels were perfectly adequate, and everything was clean. We are bed/pillow snobs (seriously) and we slept VERY well - with just a ceiling fan in July. (Make certain to close curtains on west-facing windows when you leave in the morning. Helps to cut down the afternoon heat. Room cools nicely as soon as the sun goes down.

We found the other guests to be friendly, interesting, respectful, and quiet. We never heard our room neighbors and (by choice) made friends with fellow travelers at breakfast on the courtyard. Watching hummingbirds drink from the trumpet vine was a nice treat.

Breakfast was delicious and filling. The coffee and hot dishes were tasty and the granola is out of this world. We brought home a pound - and got the recipe as a bonus. The staff was excellent - friendly and helpful.

We will definitely be returning - as soon as possible!

Room Tip: We stayed one night in #5 and three nights in #9. Both were perfectly comfortable, quiet, and could...

Kelly Place is more than a normal B&B. from its quite location, the historic background if the area, the room setup, and especially the friendliness of the person makes it very welcoming.

The only con is the soundproofing between the rooms, however guests are generally quite.

This B&B is located about 12 miles outside of the town of Cortez and about 30 minutes from Mesa Verde in a BEAUTIFUL isolated valley. There are even Indian ruins on the property. Our room was clean and had space for three of us, our bags, and clothes. We had the one queen bed and our daughter slept in the bunk bed. The bathroom, added on, was tiny but adequate. The common areas were large and well appointed. Breakfasts were excellent! There was a nice patio to sit and to greet two friendly cats. There was also an outdoor refrig to store wine/snacks. While we used this B&B primarily as a staqing area for Mesa Verde, it would make a nice destination on its own to just unwind and go for hikes. Note: apparently there are flights to Denver from Cortez.

Room Tip: Ask for a room downstairs in the back near the refrig.

I describe it as an archeological b&b. 12miles from Cortez up Mc Elroy Canyon. Sits on 80 acrea adjacent to Canyon of the Ancients...nothing about it is up scale. Folksy in every way, proprieters are a wonderful couple working hard to make special, and they do.
Wonderful hot breakfast every morn, constant cool drinks and snacks all day.
We stayed in the casita, recommended. Lodge rooms are tight.
Comfortable living room and patio, again nothing fancy, just comfy.
You can hike right from the property into several Canyon of the Ancients canyons. Great hikes, flowers, ruin sites etc...
They have diggings on their property and a great collection of artifacts.
Don't miss the Ute Tribal Park, all day tour!
Mancos was also fun. Drove by the original Wetherill Ranch, now Alomo Ranch...
I would go back to the Kelly Place without reservation....

Room Tip: Recommend casita

Stayed 3 days at this B&B. Large, clean, comfortable room with queen size bed with extra beds for families. Nice bathroom with stand-up shower. Deluxe room has refrigerator and microwave. Was able to view ancient ruins on site, very enjoyable. Quiet, peaceful, atmosphere for relaztion. No outside lock, but can latch sliding door when occupied. The room had wi-fi, but no cell phone service or TV. No coffee service in room. Room serviced (towels changed/trash removed) after 2 days. Breakfast served from 7:30 am and buffet style: seasoned scrambled eggs or french toast, diced fruit, and cereal/granola with silk milk. Also coffee and jucies, bagels, english muffins, and toast.

Somewhat remote, about 10 miles from Cortez. Eat before you check-in or during your stay.
Recommended.

Room Tip: Deluxe room or cabin. May not have a lot of contact with hosts during visit, but offer telephone num...

Don't go here if you are afraid of spiders.
We checked in and immediately killed our first spider in our room.
Didnt think much of it, but my girlfriend was already spooked by that.
We went out to eat, and came back to find a mourning party of three more spiders.
I ferociously began looking for more eight legged creeps hiding in the dark, waiting for souls to consume and open mouths to invade during sleep.
Found some webs & left over trash under the bed.
Also webbing at the washing table. With a huge spider that got away.
Terror struck my girlfriend and she nearly started to cry.
This room had not been used / cleaned for a while.
I called management and we got an other room.
Wich was nicer and cleaner.
Next morning I decided to take a shower, started out lukewarm
but turned into the water surrounding the titanic after I got soaped in.
After 5 minutes of muffled screaming it turned into a stream of boiling lava, nearly burning my skin off.

Breakfast was nice, and the area surrounding the b&b too.
but be prepared for the issues described above.

Room Tip: check room first for arachnids, ask for other room when infested
