“Nice room & breakfast”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

For a very inexpensive stay, we were pleasantly surprised to be given a newly remodeled room with new furniture, mattresses, & carpet. All was spotlessly clean & the king bed room was spacious. Very impressed to find that the entire motel was smoke-free. There was no hair dryer, iron, or ironing board in the room, but I'm sure the very friendly front desk staff would have provided these had we needed them. The mattress was very comfortable and the TV actually included a guide with correct channel information - a pet peeve of mine is no guide or incorrect channel designations.

The only negative was the fact that the heat bulb for the bathroom had been replaced with a standard fluorescent, so there was no way to add additional heat in the bathroom, which is something I pretty much want year-round.
Breakfast included coffee, juice, bagels, and make-your-own waffles. Great view across the street directly onto the snow-capped mountains. Walking distance to eateries & more.

Room Tip: Two levels with outdoor corridors & no elevator. If you don't mind the stairs, the upstairs...

We stayed here for one night on our drive from Denver to Flagstaff. We arrived quite late and the guy on the desk was friendly and helpful. The room was nice but a little dated. Everything seemed to work though and we were all very tired. However we did notice stains on the bedding which was a little unpleasant.

For such a reasonable price, you get friendly check in, a clean room with frig, microwave, free parking, waffles for breakfast and great apples with lots of room to eat; very comfortable queen bed and nice surroundings.

That will be our place to stay on our way back to Phoenix.

Room Tip: We asked for a room downstairs to make taking our luggage out a lot easier since there is no elevato...

We stayed just one night, and it was a welcome retreat after nearly freezing somewhere else the night before (-10 Celsius - pretty chilly). Clean, warm and spacious room, friendly and helpful staff, good wifi and decent breakfast. The beds and pillows are good quality and comfortable. There's a guest laundry (charges apply) which is helpful when on the road. It's also very close to Mesa Verde National Park entrance, and there are plenty of food options close by - try Pepperhead for delicious Mexican food on the Main Street. I would be very happy to recommend EconoLodge Cortez for a good value mid-range option for travellers. Thanks for a great night's stay to Andrew and the team. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

My experience with this hotel was night and day and literally changed from night to morning. I was impressed by the night desk clerk. He was friendly, compassionate and interactive, asking about our trip and where we were from and empathizing with how far we had driven.

The room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bed stand was bare wood and unpainted, but I see now that they probably are in the middle of a remodel. My only complaint about the room was that it was unheated and VERY cold. We live in Iowa and are pretty cold-tolerant. I understand they don't want to pay to heat rooms for the hours they aren't used, but we'd booked ahead of time and then called to confirm our arrival time. I wish they could have at least turned on the heat to the lowest level. It was late and we were beyond tired but couldn't sleep because it took several hours for the room to warm up to minimally tolerable.

Despite that, our opinion of the room and hotel was still favorable at that point. Although the unheated room was a major discomfort for us, it can easily be remedied for future guests. I would still have given the hotel a high rating then.

The next morning, that changed. I only expected a basic breakfast given the star rating of the hotel. It was far worse than that. All that was available was cheap cereal (no kid's cereal), waffles (dispenser was a mess and the mix was lumpy) and dry bread. There was absolutely nothing to put on the bread - no butter, no jelly, no peanut butter or anything. The juice had been diluted to the point that it had no flavor.

What made matters worse was when a guest asked the desk clerk for jelly for toast, the clerk snapped that she was "too busy right now." While we waited, we further witnessed her grouse at someone asking a question about a room as well as someone on the phone, the entire while grumbling to herself unprofessionally. It apparently wasn't her morning, but why put on such a public display and take it out on the guests? Finally she went and got some pastries, barking at someone to move so she could put them in the case. Still nothing for the toast. After 30+ minutes of waiting, we gave up and went elsewhere for breakfast. I was very glad we weren't staying in the hotel a second night.

The bottom line is that this hotel has potential to be a nice, clean, 2-star hotel but our overall experience was more in line with a 1-star hotel with issues.

Room Tip: When you call ahead, ask that the heat be turned on in your room. Expect that there won't be mu...

It is always our aim to make every guest stay a memorable and enjoyable one. I am sorry to learn that we were not able to meet the goal during your stay.

The hotel practices green initiatives and this is visible from the choice hotels website and upon check in by the poster present at the front desk. Each room also has collateral informing the guests of these initiatives.

The suggestion presented to have the heat turned to a low setting is worth considering, however we have also run into situations where guests are concerned that the room is warm for their liking.

In respect to your breakfast experience, I am looking into it and very concerned that you were not promptly served or taken care of. I will like to have an opportunity to speak with you to further look into the matter.

My team and I are committed to providing exceptional service and being there for the guest.

My direct line is 970 565 9693.

I will wait to have the opportunity to speak to you

We were on our way home and got as far as Cortez. Decided to stay at Econo Lodge as they are usually pretty good and reasonably priced.

Check in was very friendly, the clerk was exceptionally nice. Got to our room and the key card did not work. Went back to the front desk and he rekeyed the cards and came to our room to make sure they would work.

They were in the process of renovating a bunch of rooms. Ours had not been totally done yet, but the room was big, VERY clean and we were more than satisfied. We needed to leave before the breakfast was up and running so went right across the street to Denny's and they were very friendly too.

This hotel is close to gas stations, Walmart and places to eat. We would definitely stay here again.

It is our aim to make every guest stay a memorable one. Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your recent stay experience with us.

The hotel just underwent new tile work in most of the bathrooms. The property schedules renovations and remodeling during the slow season.
