“Good Hotel Bad Ice”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

WE were pleasantly pleased with the inside of the motel. We checked in at 6:00 p.m. and the lady who checked us in was very pleasant . When we arrived on Friday evening we arrived during a ice storm so we decided to try out the restaurant in the hotel.. We enjoyed very tasty food and our waiter was very friendly.. Our bed in our room was very comfortable and the room was very clean.. The only complaint that we have is when we checked out on Sunday the parking lot and part of the sidewalks were still all ice although they had put some salt on the sidewalks there was nothing done to the parking lot which made it very hard and unsafe to walk on to load up our vehicle..

I am glad to hear you enjoyed the property and the staff. Sorry the ice kept this from being a 5-star experience. We hope to see you on your next visit, thank you for the business!

We enjoyed a wonderful New Year's Eve stay at this hotel. This property is a solid three star affair. That said, hotels are really a product of how well they are managed, not their star rating. We have stayed at excellent 2.5 star properties, and we have stayed at downright horrible four star resorts. All the stars in the world won't help you if the rooms are dirty, or the front desk is rude. This hotel has neither of those issues. Our room was impeccably clean, and this is coming from a certified neat freak. Every staff member we encountered was extremely kind and helpful. We were also surprised at how good the on site restaurant was. Granted, there were nearly zero other patrons dining beside us, but that made it more intimate and enjoyable. We chose to stay in one of their executive suites, and I'm so glad we did. It was by far the largest non-penthouse suite we've ever stayed in. Certainly the largest suite we've ever encountered in your standard chain hotel. We loved it. In conclusion, for your money, this is an excellent hotel. It's not the same as the Waldorf mind you, but it also doesn't cost the same as the Waldorf. This is Madison, not Milan. Some of the negative reviewers would do well to consider that fact. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and if we are ever in the Madison area again, we will certainly return to this establishment.

Room Tip: Go with the HUGE executive suite!

First time stay here was unpleasant. Arrived at the hotel at the time we were supposed to and had to wait an hour to get in room. Arcade ran out of quarters after a dollar. Bad location. Tv doesnt work well. Managed to get the hobbit movie on the t.v. it was good. Room was nice and pretty. Service was garbage. Ordered over $40 worth of breakfast room service. Screwed the order up so the food was just thrown away. (Ordered vegetarian omelet and there was ham in it )Wouldnt give us any compensation.

Came to visit family and celebrate our wedding anniversary. Found this hotel to be very conveniently located and provided everything we were looking for. Very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Even though they have Sleep Number beds, I didn't find them very comfortable but then again, didn't spend the time to figure out how to use it since we were only staying one night. Has a pool, whirlpool and a bar restaurant attached, but again, didn't used thoe amenities either as we were out and about on the town to watch the Badgers play, etc. We had one little issue with our TV, called the front desk and they immediately sent someone to fix it and did quickly. So really, besides the somewhat uncomforable bed, would stay here again and would recommend. Some of the negative feedback on this site seems odd to me since we didn't not experience antying they did, but figure some people just like to give negative reviews no matter what.

I stayed here for training at Epic and had to meet a per-diem rate as required by my company. What I found was a mix of new and old features on an otherwise aging structure. The staff were generally pleasant, the room was generally clean. Some of the low points included a bathroom fan in dire need of service, gungy old doors and hardware, a TV without a sleep timer configurable by the provided remote, and mattress material that caused hot spots/overheating (like cheaper foam does). Some of the nicer features included a decently sized flat panel TV, modern tile floors in the bathroom, newer carpet, and the Sleep Number bed, for the adjustable firmness/softness (but see note about cheap material. There are tradeoffs), and wireless internet that was actually….fast. The Bartender at Basie's is also a friendly guy (probably the best customer service experience in the whole hotel!). The Rad Mad itself is a value, but not a great one. Not great enough to make me want to stay here again, which says taking a chance elsewhere might be worth even a marginal win on some of the negatives that detract from this hotel. An additional $20/night in this town will put you in a much newer facility--it may be worth paying that out of pocket on my next trip to Madison because once you reach a certain point in life, you just want to be comfortable without tradeoffs.

We stayed here for an event in the downtown area. The location is kind of out of the way, but I was pleased with the accommodations. The room was clean and updated. Breakfast is complimentary and very good. More than the typical hotel. My only complaint is the service standards. I am a hotel manager, and their front desk staff is very unhelpful. Unacceptable. We had someone enter our room in the middle of the night, and when I called the front desk they said that it wasn't a staff member, and left it at that. No concern. So, they gave someone a key to our room? That is a big no-no for hotels. In the morning, we woke up to find that someone smeared peanut butter all over our door handle. Again, front desk was called, but did not care and took no action. They didn't even send housekeeping to clean the mess, so we had to leave our door proped open all morning so we didn't touch the handle. They should really send their staff through customer service training. It would dramatically increase overall customer satisfaction.

This is an older property, but has been updated. Exterior of the building looks older, but well kept. Interior has been updated. Rooms are well appointed with modern decor and quite comfortable. Rooms have all needed amenities including refrigerator. Downside is long interconnecting hallways that can be confusing, especially if your room is located on the other side of the building. Nice little pool area, however I never saw it actually being used. Possibly most people staying in the hotel were business travelers, but only saw it being cleaned, but no one ever in it. Lounge/restaurant had a nice atmosphere. However, I would not again order the same entree, I found the shrimp fettucinne alfredo to be very heavy and rich with limited flavor. Our business group was offered a complimentary happy hour and appetizers one evening, which was very nice. The appetizers were an assortment of cheeses, meats, and crackers, which were very tasty and who could ever refuse New Glarus Spotted Cow on tap!
