I work close to the lake on the UW Campus and it's always great to be able to stop over. I've enjoyed boat tours of the lake and most recently had stopped at Governor Nelson State Park to view the lake. Another favorite is to hike out on Picnic Point and view the campus skyline and downtown Madison.

My wife and I walked around Lake Mendota while visiting Madison. There is a walking & jogging path that is close to the water. The lake is much larger than we expected and there were lots of boats in the water. We were told that fishing here is excellent. Spending time around Lake Mendota is a nice way to relax.

I took a drive out towards the water while I was in Madison & ended up at Lake Mendota just in time to take pictures of the sun setting over the lake....just gorgeous! It also looked like a great area for hiking, jogging, walking, or for some peace & solitude. The parking was convenient & there's a walking/jogging path that you can follow down closer to the water.

Grab a pitcher of beer or enjoy some Babcock ice cream from the Memorial Union while you sit outside by the lake, listening to free concerts. Or go tanning on the pier or boating out in the lake. Or jogging down the lakeshore path to picnic point (a very scenic spot). You can do all these activities and more during the summer by Lake Mendota. In the winter, bring your shanty and sit out on the frozen lake to do some ice fishing. Regardless of what you do, Lake Mendota is a beautiful lake that caters to all.

I watched this lake for over 20 years going through its life cycle and freze and thaws. It's beautiful or ugly at times. Definitely a great lake and location hugging the isthmus of Madison. I liked it best when they cleaned it up about 10 years ago. Then they let the fertilizers come on back and "grow the green". They say it's the Farmers,I say it's the homeowners with their pristine pollution causing yards, and yard service companies. I will always love it no matter what, it's big and bold, and a great place to sail and fish.
