This is primarily an outdoor science lab. A large collection of trees. I guess it's nice of UW to let the public walk around, but that's all you can do. The signs direct you to other nearby parks, for recreation. No dogs allowed, so our dog had to stay in the car. No picnics, so we had to eat sandwiches in the car. Oh Well. You'll love it if you don't have pets, aren't hungry, and are working on a botany degree.

I rented a Madison City bike and rode through the Arboretum. Its basically just a long road winding through the woods. It's beautiful but there's no signage labeling various trees, no seating, etc. There are a few little foot trails of the road into the woods you can walk on but I didn't try them because you can't bike. A nice place to peddle through but not informative or educational, and no place to sit and enjoy the woods.

It was gorgeous. I would have like a bit more signs giving me the history of the arboretum but overall, it was a great walk.

The Arboretum is Outdoor Wisconsin at it's best. Nice visitors' center. Hundreds and hundreds of indigenous plants. You'll forget you're in the center of a city. A real gem if you love "nature".
