Review of Batch Bakehouse

Batch Bakehouse
Ranked #3 of 19 Bakeries in Madison
Description: Batch Bakehouse is a small bakery that specializes in Croissants and classic French Baguette. We bake fresh from scratch every day. Offering a variety of artisanal loaf breads and a wide selection of pastry. Our chefs seem to put something new in the case every day, stop in to see what we've baked today. Our croissant items tend to sell out early, so come early and often to get the best selection; or simply call ahead and we'll hide your order behind the counter.

Went here on a Saturday afternoon for coffee and a cake. Good selection on offer. We choose the apple cake which was amazing. Had a coffee with it which was also quick good. (It's from a dispenser though)

Offerings change daily, so you cannot count on the same items being offered day-to-day.
Recently had great savory: Carmelized onion-walnut-cheese strudel made with croissant dough; mini-quiches with veggies and bacon or andouille sausage; croissants with cheese or cheese and ham. Wish they used mushrooms and spinach more often as fillings, but when they do the results are delectable. Recent sweets: mini-pies with mixed or single berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and sometimes added peaches, or chocolate with berries); had avoided an apple cake due to its homey/homely appearance but after hearing raves tried it and found flavor, richness and moist texture like a brownie (no chocolate, just fruit). Weekends bring out more varieties of croissants, including mini-croissants and more fillings. Big chocolate chip cookies (sometimes nuts or peanut butter types too) are wonderful and usually under $2.

Tips: Street parking is limited -- not clear if lot behind store is open to customers. Pedestrian traffic can be high with lots of people walking and jaywalking to get to the bakery at breakfast hours and on weekends. Watch out for strollers! Inside seating is stools at countertops; there is warm weather outdoor seating at 2-3 tables. Be prepared for hand-crafted pricing -- a mini-pie or quiche is $5, for example. If your bagged or boxed order adds up, they do take credit cards. They offer cold bottled/carton drinks from a glass door cooler. Intelligentsia Coffee out of Chicago is featured -- too bad I've never seen them offer my fave, Black Cat. Look for quiches, key lime mini-pies and other delicate pastries in lower glass case near register.

I have a huge sweet tooth, and this place does the job. They have fresh, home-style baked goods, with a sophisticated twist. Some of my favorite items are the caramel salted brownie, the gallette (when they have it,) and their pretzels...yes, fresh pretzels!

There are way, way too many good options to mention. They also have great mini-quiches.

Though I'm a regular, they often have something new that I haven't tried.

They also have a convenient blackboard that shows their bread baking schedule. Of course, they have tons of great bread options as well.
