We just enjoyed a wonderful football weekend at the ideally-located HotelRed. Directly across from Camp Randall stadium, our suite had a balcony overlooking the fieldhouse and all the pre-and post-game fun.
The suite's red, black and gray modern decor included polished concrete floors with area rugs, a low contemporary bed, a terrific mini-kitchen and well-appointed bath. The suites are aimed at longterm business travelers, so the kitchen includes a sink, cooktop, microwave, minifridge, dishwasher, dishes, utensils, etc. We especially appreciated the Keurig coffee maker with assorted pods.
Someone is paying attention to details. The bed was very comfortable, with pristine white sheets and a downy comforter and pillows. Towels were fluffy, the robes comfy and we loved the Aveda toiletries. Staff left miniature gourmet chocolates from a shop down the street on our pillow at night.
The pullout couch and chairs were less comfortable, although the desk chair was great. The flatscreen TV was a good size.
The bathroom was pretty cool, with black granite counters and a red vessel sink. The large shower had excellent pressure, a fabulous drenching overhead fixture, multiple showerheads and a wand.
In an apparent bid to create a loft feeling, the wall between the bathroom and living space does not extend to the celling. When someone enters the bathroom at night, light floods into the sleeping area. Worse, the sliding door between the toilet/shower area and sink does not create a seal when closed. The result: sound from that room is weirdly amplified into the living area.
The porch was fantastic; spacious with two chairs and a small table.
Staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We had somewhat pricey drinks at the bar one evening and chatted with a nice young student bartender. There is free candy at the checkout desk, and muted TV's outside each elevator door so you don't miss a minute of the game.
The room was expensive for Madison, and there was a 2-night minimum. It was much, much nicer than other hotels where we've spent football weekends -- we definitely plan to return next year.
