We went here on a Friday night. It was not busy. Service was slow and not really friendly. I would call it cordial. Our food was ok. Not at all memorable. We will not return. Too many other choices nearby that we know will not disappoint. They used to have another location that we frequented and it was a favorite so this was a surprising disappointment.

In Madison and from Texas, I was expecting insipid Mexican food, but really nicely spiced and good. It started with good salsa and chips - the salsa was tasty with some bits of cilantro in it and the chips were light. I had a taco salad, which was healthier than usual in Texas, with minimal refried beans and lots of fresh vege chunks. Even with a beer, under $20!

At lunch time during a busy conference in the area, they had one girl working outside of the kitchen. Very poor staffing.

We've eaten at Casa de Lara in the past, but after our recent experience we don't intend upon returning any time soon. We hit the tail end of the lunch hour and our first hint should have been that we didn't see any servers in a relatively full dining room. We waited and a young man finally came out and seated us not in the main room, but by ourselves in the "back room". I thought that was odd, but what was more odd was that we weren't given menus. Several minutes later, he returned with menus and water, so we thought it was just a temporary blip.

Many minutes later -- as we are debating leaving -- a waitress comes over and tells us that she can't help us for five minutes or so. Now, we're just sort of curious about what's going on, so we decide to stay to see. She does return in five minutes and with the most cursory kind of courtesy takes our order. She wasn't rude, but it was clearly an effort for her to spend the 90 seconds at our table to take our order. Our food came out in about 10 minutes, by which time we were one of only two tables left. The food was lukewarm. My enchiladas cilantro only lived up to their name by the few sprinkles of cilantro ont the top -- otherwise, they were extremely bland chicken enchiladas with no other flavor and, literally, no heat. The beans were of the canned variety. We then had to flag her down to get drink refills, because even though the place was empty, our service did not improve.

All in all, not a place to which I'd return. We wish we'd left.

We stopped here on a whim because we were starving and were trying to find a place that had food that would appeal to everyone including a 2-year-old. (who won't eat a tortilla with cheese at the very minimum?) We arrived in late afternoon on a Saturday, place was almost empty, and we stood in front for a little over 5 minutes before we were noticed and at first we started to worry about our choice-and it took a few minutes for a waiter to get to us once seated, but once he waited on us for the first time, he was very attentive. (and a cute guy too which was fun for all of us were gals ages 2-46!) We also had an attentive busboy who made sure our water glasses were filled, etc...The staff was very kind to our toddler, bringing her a little portion cup with maraschino cherries when she dropped the one that was on top of a smoothie, plus just had lots of smiles and good attitude. The food was very good to excellent. Fish tacos, quesadillas, tacos-the salsa was spicy, the chips were fresh and flavorful-the guacamole seemed homemade and not from a package. We had delicious drinks-smoothies and lemonade-the decor was enjoyable and artistic. We had a great time and would go back.
