Visiting Madison, WI for a family wedding, and all the locals encouraged us to visit the farmer's market. So much more than local veggies :-) although the strawberries we munched on as we walked were delish! There were jewelry makers, cheese makers (it is Wisconsin, after all), baked goods to die for, and I even scored some hand-spun alpaca yarn from the nice lady who owned the alpacas! Such a surprise and delight!

A people watching and talking happening that moves counter clockwise around the State Capitol (yes THAT capitol building). First get a cup of coffee and a friend, then start walking from any place on the "square." With multiple choices of honey, coffee, cheese, muffins, breads, cookies, cheesecake and pies, produce, flowers, and my favorite is Cress Spring Bakery. Their Chocolate Fire cookies are awesome! The bread is crusty and creative with interesting flour blends. Expedition bread is one of my all time favorites. Stop by Cress Spring early as their inventory diminishes as the morning rolls on! Its usually located to the right of WI Ave as your back is to the capitol building at WI Ave. Hope that makes directional sense. When you're done with the market, take a stroll in the capitol. Its free and beautiful inside.

I was raised in Madison and the market has always been a staple for weekly groceries, once even an adorable kitten to take home. When you shop many vendors have similar items so finding the brat value can be tricky. The crowds can be enormous especially with the strollers and wagons (many from local restaurants). Always tasty and a great way to spend 2-3 hours.

Other reviewers have adequately described the Madison Farmer's Market -- it's a great location and vendors offer a wide variety of agricultural products. My favorite is Larry the Gourd Guy. He offers nicely cleaned and reasonably priced gourds of all shapes and sizes. So be sure to stop and talk with Larry. He will answer your questions about gourds, he will smile as you sort through the gourds on display, and he will even let you paw through the bags of gourds in reserve if you ask politely. Larry is a jovial guy and you will feel good even as you leave him. But you will feel even better if you buy a gourd or two. Just imagine all the designs you can put on them or what a nice bird house one would make.

Imagine your Saturday morning enjoying a fresh cup of coffee and a pastry of your choice on the beautiful grounds of the Wisconsin State Capitol. That's what Madison offers every Saturday morning during the Spring, Summer, & early Fall months. Hundreds of farmers and vendors encircle the Capitol square offering an array of seasonal fruits, vegetables, cheeses, plants, fresh cut flowers, and baked goods to the thousands that make this a weekly excursion every Saturday morning. Everything displayed and sold must be made or grown in Wisconsin. No crafts or gadgets for sale.

As you enjoy a leisurely stroll around the market you'll see families relaxing on the Capitol lawn and kids happily experiencing the "climbing tree." Come early if you can. By 9:00 it gets pretty crowded. While you are there take a walk down State St and a visit inside the Capitol building.

An event that is truely Madison. Don't miss it.
