I see the phrase buy local often, but in Madison, Wisconson, they really mean it. Most folk really do look for locally grown food and as such this farmers market is one of the best in the country.

Each year, I happily travel 2 hours one way to visit the best Farmers market in the area. Plenty of great organic selections, nice variety of fruits, vegetables, plants, sweets, breads and cheese! If you hit the market at the right time, the Madison summer street festival will accompany this lovely market. More fabulous shopping on a Saturday afternoon. Get there early for the best food selections. Prepare for thick crowds as the afternoon approaches. Bring lots of singles and fives as most purchases are around that dollar range and vendors always appreciate exact change. Bring a your own basket, rolling cart or reusable bags as not to waste plastic bags. Wear comfortable shoes, as this market goes all around the Capital building. Most vendors will happily store your big purchases (like 14 ears of corn) and you can drive around and pick them up at the end of your shopping day. Enjoy a great day out and fill your basket with delicious treasures!!

This farmer's market is the best one I have ever been to and the largest producer's only market in the US. It is located by the capitol. My wife and I purchased blueberries, raspberries, cherries, tomatoes and jam. We never had such delicious fruit anywhere else. There are also excellent baked goods. I wish that I lived much nearer to the farmer's market. The market takes place on Saturday mornings. There is a smaller version on Wednesdays.

A really small-town country venue you wouldn't expect in a town like Madison.
The larges market one is on Saturdays on the Capital Square, with numerous others around town or in various parking lots under tents. Probably not of interest to tourists staying in hotels, but a must for new arrivals to town. Everything from flowers, to fruits, to vegetables and cooked foods and baked goods...at good prices too and it supports the small business community at the same time...and everything is fresh.

If you are in the Madison Wisconsin area on a Saturday morning you really need to stop by and check out the farmers market. Frist of all they don't let any vendors whose produce or product is not from WI in where as the Des Moines Farmers market does. Everything is locally grown or made and lots of vendors let you sample the product before you make a purchase. I just think this is one of the best places to go but just watch out for the strollers as you may be run over by one.
