The new Madison library is very nice, but it has almost immediately become the place for the city's homeless to congregate. Don't get me wrong, it is just as much theirs as it is ours, but it definitely doesn't make you want to spend any time there. Every aisle I walked down, there was someone in a chair at the end of the aisle with their bags of clothes and just kind of staring at you as you browse. We most likely will not be coming back, sadly.

We "did" this building from top to bottom (literally) while in Madison this year. Involved in convincing our town in CA to invest in a new library, the Madison Public's main library re-do (not a "new" library) was a wonderful view of what can be done when folks are willing to think creatively about the needs of all citizens in the 21st century. A very knowledgeable librarian spoke to us at great length giving facts, figures and pointing out where to go inside the library to see what. Kids' facilities; creative spaces; adult spaces are all terrific. Madison also has branch libraries so this is not the total picture for the city but once again it makes Madison an excellent place to think about living.

Located in downtown Madison, across from the Overture Center, the downtown, central Madison Public Library has just completed a 9 million dollar renovation and will formally open on September 22. It has a 250-person auditorium, a 75 person room and 3 times the number of FREE computers with internet that the previous library had. It also has a cafe.
I was invited to a sneak preview and was overwhelmed at how different the facility is. It is a green facility, bright, open with lots of comfortable areas to just sit and relax. It has a large child friendly Children's Area. One exciting feature is "The Bubbler" room. This room will allow ideas to bubble up from the community. For example, various artist have already signed up to create art pieces in this room.this area even has its own website--www.madisonbubbler.org
Well worth stopping in to see, if not for refreshments or to read.
