“Very comfortable accomodations in Madison!”
Reviewed 5 May 2013

I stayed with my wife at the Best Western Inntowner in Madison, WI in room 434 from April 25-30, 2013. The stay was quite pleasant, towels were fluffy and plentiful, we asked for and received an abundance of hangers, parking was fine, we either had no neighbors or the acoustic insulation was very good, internet bandwidth was sufficient to watch hulu/netflix videos (and free), the breakfast was decent (though we got tired of the food after two mornings and went elsewhere) and offered multiple options with good service. Free coffee in lobby (decaf and regular), indoor pool was available but small, no laps, just soaking. Ironing board/iron, standard amenities were all available as one might expect.
Walk to the engineering buildings on campus was about 15 minutes, though they had a free shuttle to take you places (need to reserve) and pick you up.

As other reviewers have noted, it's at the far end of the UW campus. So if your business/entertainment is near the east end of campus or near the Capitol be prepared to walk 1-2 miles, drive (pay for parking) or schedule one of their complimentary shuttles in advance. Only once was I unable to schedule the shuttle on about half an hour's notice.

The breakfast buffet was at the top end of budget hotels. Pancakes, potatoes, sausage, french toast, fruit (melons and pineapple), yogurt, etc. All prepared by a human being rather than one of those pour some corn syrup into a waffle iron deals.

My stay was uneventful and I didn't demand much of the staff beyond a clean room and some quiet. The window opened if you slide up a locking mechanism which I like - I prefer fresh air to constantly running AC/heat.

I paid under 100 but would be happy had I paid more.

Dear Poreef,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post such a kind review on TripAdvisor. We really appreciate when guests provide feedback, since it helps us on our quest to continually improve each and every guests stay.

I do apologize that we were unable to accommodate on our shuttle that one time, and I do hope that any other arrangements that were made to you were to your satisfaction. Our shuttle is a popular service, and there is talk of expanding it to accommodate more guests.

We know that you have a choice of accommodations here in Madison, and we thank you for choosing us and hope to see you again on your next visit to our city.

Thank you and Make it a Great Day!

I recently spent 4 nights at this hotel. I have nothing but good things to say about it. It was very clean. The staff were superb. The free breakfast buffet was excellent. Dinner in the restaurant was pretty good too. There is a small bar next to the restaurant, and they serve free popcorn in the lobby. The only thing I stayed away from was the food in the cooler. It wasn't very cold so I thought milk and a ham sandwich might be a bad idea. Indoor pool and hot tub were great.

The only downside is the location if you plan on attending events on the UW campus. The hotel is on the west side of town. It is a 30 minute walk to campus. It's a nice walk when the weather cooperates. They offer a shuttle which worked out great. But all of the action on State Street is on the opposite side of campus. As a result there were only 2-3 restaurants within walking distance and the area is dead at night. It is extremely close to the hospital. A lot of the customers were there to visit the hospital.

June 13-14, 2012
My wife had an annual appointment at the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics. Hoping to get better treatment than we received with our previous Best Western stay (I can't review it, too long ago), I registered with Best Western's Reward Program.

We even personally contacted them, payed more, splurging for the promise of a dozen warm cookies waiting, a concierge, and a Priority Reservation, for the Highland Club.

When we arrived, they could not find our Priority Reservation – even with the confirmation number. After 1½ hours, someone finally found our reservation. Then, our elevator/room key would not work. They gave us a replacement and that worked in the elevator, but not on the room lock. The manager tried and even he couldn’t get it to work. Another key and last it did work. When we finally arrived in our room, were there a dozen hot cookies? No. The concierge had already left so it was too late for them.

Could it get worse? After all these problems, I wanted to soak in their hot tub. Of course, by now, the hot tub was closed. It had closed early. Oh, well, at least there is the internet. Wrong! It didn’t work.

Adding insult to injury, the next morning – dreaming of my husbandly duty of bringing breakfast in bed to my wife – something else occurred that we were not warned about. No breakfast could be taken back to the room. My wife had forgotten her bathrobe, so they provided one for her to wear over her nightgown. However, it was several sizes too small.
My wife with no makeup, no shower, nightgown, too small bathrobe, dirty socks in shoes – To say that my wife was not happy is an understatement!

Oh, yeah, we finally received the dozen hot cookies as we were checking out.

This property appears to date from the 1970s. It is in generally good repair although the decor is a bit dated, especially the carpets in the hallways. The rooms are a good size with the only difficulty being a lack of power outlets near the desk; we didn't travel with so many electronic devices 40 years ago!

The pool and fitness ares are OK with all the basic equipment. Breakfast buffet was also acceptable, but nothing to become to excited about. If you are visiting someone at the hospital the location is convenient and within a five minute walk of the hospital and medical school (3 blocks away). Several decent bars and small restaurants are also nearby on University or Highland.

Dear John,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on TripAdvisor. Its only with feedback from guests like you can we hope to improve out services and hotel for your futures stays.

I will be honest, I am in complete agreement. Our decor is a little dated, and we sometimes don't have enough outlets in the room for this modern technology world. We are definitely keeping these things in mind as we finish putting the final details on the renovation that begins this fall. We're super excited about bringing the property to the level where we exceed our guests expectation. It is my sincere hope that you'll give us a chance sometime after our renovation, so that we may show you how your feed back has helped change things for the better.

Please feel free to contact me directly later this fall to help ensure that your next stay is an experience of restrained perfection. Again, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

J. Belmont

Great for a football weekend, but perfect anytime. Comfortable accommodation, simple and practical. Very good breakfast. Front desk staff was excellent. It would help if housekeeping staff knew some English!

We stayed here for my husband's surgery because of a lot of snow the night before. We live only about 25 miles away but during/after a snow storm our area is one of the last ones to be plowed.
Well, it was a great decision. We had booked through the UW hospital for late arrival and everything was set when we came. The room was very comfortable and clean, the staff outstanding and helpful, and the beds very good too. After I took my husband to surgery I came back for the breakfast and it was one of the best ones I had in a long time at a hotel. From fruit to eggs to pastry to great coffee and a very friendly staff, nothing to complain about. I am sure we will be back - even without a surgery as a reason.
