was planning on staying for several months for work..ended up staying a week then they wanted us to move room to room because they had ours already reserved... the exercise room is pitiful..treadmill would not work, the other machines would not work good, the pool is cloudy and dirty.. the sauna had graffiti all over the inside of it... the back deck has nice view of the woods if you like looking at the trash that people have through down..beer cans,bags,etc....very dated rooms...they come and would clean the room but would not clean the bath tub...carpets are very nasty...frig was froze soild when i got here and would not get cold, so had to unplug it to let the ice melt then plug it in the next day.....the ac from room above drips on you if your below on your deck..

This is the 3rd time I have taken a team of high school girls here while we have been playing in a local tournament. The inn is a wonderful place! Every single staff member I encountered was polite and accommodating. Instead of employees, the staff all act like owners who actually care. From the woman who patiently checked us in and was so accomodating in trying to get our block of rooms as close together as possible, to the friendly gentlemen who works 7pm to 7am, to Veronica who VERY patiently had to unscrew a deadbolt lock blindly after our teenage girls managed to lock themselves out when the accidentally shut the connecting room door with the door deadbolt shut, to the tiny front desk clerk who lugged a rollaway bed down flights of stairs for us, to the employee who politely asked the girls to be quiet in the hallway and instead of yelling at them then offered to let them sit in the lobby and listen to music and also reminded them to always travel in pairs and keep their rooms locked (not because the hotel was unsafe-but just because she cared enough to give them personal safety tips), to the housekeepers who were always friendly and smiling when we passed them in the hall, to the woman who let us move tables around so we could eat pizza together as a team in the lobby area, to the employee who kept having to refill the breakfast items since our group was large-I can't say THANK YOU enough!! No where else would we receive this type of personal service!! I wish I had written down all of your names. You are all wonderful people and we will be back again next year because of you!!

Below is my email to Spring House Inn, Porter,IN, after our recent stay. I never did get a response:

I would like to take some time to write you about our recent stay at Spring House Inn. Porter,IN.
We stayed last week from July 4th to July 6th, two nights total. Room 110, king bed with whirlpool tub.
Celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary.

First, the online reservation process went well. Prompt replies and no problems on arrival. The main entrance to the hotel was nice and well kept.
The staff was polite and courteous.

However, the main entrance's A/C must have not been working. No time during the day was it comfortable in the main lobby or breakfast area.
The breakfast was nice if you could stand the discomfort of the temp.
Our room had several cob webs on the ceiling with a large one over the bed that I had to remove.
I killed three water bugs in our bathroom and two large black ants on the floor next to the bed.
After returning home and doing laundry, I found a bug in the lent trap of our dryer that closely resembled a bedbug.(wife does not know)
The hot tub had not been cleaned very well. There was some oily residue around the knobs. There was, what appeared to be wax, on the tub and on the carpet.
There was a small hole in the fitted sheet and another, not so small hole, in the ruffle around the bed. And the mattress pad had stains on it.
There were beer cans and other trash outside on the ground next to our balcony.
The hallway leading to our room did not smell like a non/smoking hallway.
The landscaping in the parking lot was not kept up. Even though the grass was dry and dead there were tall weeds in the islands and surrounding areas.

I understand the room rates are lower than many places in the area, perhaps, due to the age of the place, but there is no excuse for lack of cleanliness and comfort. The wooden stair casings and banisters had not been dusted in many areas. A feather duster and some air freshener could make a world of difference with the house keeping.

I would greatly appreciate a timely response to this email.

Room Tip: The lobby was extremely hot and could not enjoy our breakfast. The wirlpool tub next to the king bed...

Our stay was a delight. From the staff, to the breakfast and the cleanliness of the rooms. We spoke to the front desk staff about the parking lot outside and they explained to us that it is owned by the real estate company that owns the building next door to them and it wasn't their property to maintain. I saw the front desk outside watering plants and seemingly making an effort to keep things looking delightful. There was wildlife exploring the grounds and it was just a marvelous view. There are a few things that do need to be updated but never the less still a comfortable place to stay. The breakfast was kept up and clean and the staff was joking and laughing with us. All together a very lovely hotel for the price we paid. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a somber get away.

Room Tip: Woodside view is the best!

This Inn has been my family's place for get-togethers and holidays for several years. The adjoining rooms are great for our big clan. The Inn was on the decline a few years back but new owners are restoring it to it's former glory. The woodland setting is an awesome sight during the Fall and Winter months. Ask for a room on the backside of the motel. The rooms are dated and the furniture is a bit worn but this isn't the Ritz and for $60 a night you can't beat the price. We love coming here year after year to swim in the pool and enjoy the great fireplace. I recommend this Inn to families and couples (the whirlpool room is very romantic for just $10 more!) The mini fridge is useful and big enough for wine bottles. The full size microwave is handy for heating up Chinese take-out from a place in town. On a few occasions we've had surprise parties in the room. The staff was always helpful in making sure they went off without a hitch. We love this place!

To say that Spring House has not been maintained in 5 years is VERY inaccurate.

The front foyer area and breakfast area is lovely and clean, as are the halls and sitting areas.
Our country-style decorated room and bathroom, while an eensy-bit dated, were comfortable and clean as well. The staff is kind and friendly.

It's also quiet and the wooded valley is relaxing and peaceful.

However, there were some things that need some improvement. You can tell that this nice hotel was nicer back in the day. Nothing a few minor updates can't fix.

A response to wishing2gonorth--

Lobby/Air Conditioning: Here's the whole story. Indy had record 100 degree heat, and a recent storm had busted the air conditioning. That's why it was so hot! The staff apologized and said it's not not normally like that and had a repairman looking into the problem.

Breakast: Your regular ole fine hot hotel breakfast. Yes, it was hard boiled eggs and sausages, but there was the typical cereal, oatmeal, pastries, etc. Tasted fine. They also have a waffle maker and that wasn't a mess!

Woods: So relaxing and peaceful! Real shame that some other patrons got lazy and tossed their beer cans into the woods. Not that much litter, the woods and little stream are still beautiful

Our Hotel room: Clean, comfortable, no problems except a small ceiling spot and small bit of grease on the balcony leftover by a lazy griller. Pleased overall.

Floors/Walls: Not creaky but the walls do seem thin. But was still quiet and had no trouble sleeping.

Pool: Not green. Looked like your typical highly-chlorinated hotel pool. It does have a nice deck with a few lounge chairs.

I encountered people who had come there several times before. They didn't seem upset by the quality:

Suggested improvements:
-Clean up the woods (pick up the few bits of litter and lounge chair)
-Refinish the outside deck by breakfast area
-Add native woodland plantings to the landscaping in front
-tear down some of the empty unused parking lot, add grass
-replace sign by hwy 20.

Those are little things...Spring House is still very nice and we'd stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the woods are quiet. Pick room overlooking parking lot if you don't like bugs.

The staff is kind, and but the positive things about this hotel end there. The hotel appears to have had no matinence in at least 5 years. The shower head was broken, the ceiling in the bathroom looked like someone had vomited on it, the ceiling in the bedroom looked like it was going to fall in from water damage, and the floors creak as if you are going to fall through, our rooms door had Obviously been broken down and improperly repaired making it difficult to latch. The entire lobby and breakfast area was not air conditioned, the pool was green. The continental breakfast was so bad (the heat spoiled the food making what was there unedible) that they considered hard boiled eggs and Raisin bran a hot breakfast. I will never say here again, unless it gets new management. Some other ppl staying were upset, and they said it used to be so nice, but has been under new management for a while.
