Owner description: An excellent record store specializing in music with New Orleans origins.

I went here for the first time recently to get some Cajun and Zydeco CD's. Their selection was plentiful, and I found what I wanted. You can listen to whatever genre/artist you are looking for at several "listening stations", which are loaded with all their music, before you buy. You can even buy old vinyl records here, for the true collector. The staff know their music, and can tell you all about the local venues, and who's playing where. Well worth a visit.

If you are a fan of New Orleans, Louisiana, and roots music, Louisiana Music Factory is "the" place in New Orleans to shop. You can give new releases a listen, browse old vinyl and CDs, or just hang out. The staff is extremely helpful in locating hard to find releases and giving advice on bands to see while you're in New Orleans. And most of the time, they are excited to talk music history and bands with you. On weekends, the store often hosts free concerts by local artists.

I've been buying music from record shops for nearly 50 years and the Louisiana Music Factory has to be my favorite. It is what a record shop should be, tied closely to its community. Given the dominance of Amazon and the availability of subscription music services, it is refreshing to visit a record shop with a clear focus and the expertise to back it up. This is a place to go to buy Louisiana music in all its forms, to dig through bins of cds and vinyl for extant recordings, some of which are quite obscure. This is where I've gotten recordings by Tuba Fats, Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots, Don Vappie, Gerald French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band, the To Be Continued Brass Band, Kidd Jordan and Mardi Gras Indians. Having visited the shop recently I began obsessing over a Gerald French recording. Because their website was being rebuilt (their website, by the way, is a treasure all by itself), I ended up calling in my order, which arrived in two days.

The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and dedicated. They trust you and let you keep your bags with you. When they can, they invite musicians in for free in store performances. And you don't even need to ask. They'll give you tips on music to see in town, and will steer you right.

If you love New Orleans, Louisiana, and the region, you'll enjoy visiting this shop. If you're only curious, go in anyway and look at the new music or thumb through bins of blues, jazz, funk/soul, and traditional music done Louisiana style, or look over their collections of books and dvds about New Orleans. Its a great way to immerse yourself.

.....don't see the depth of back catalog you used to there.

But this still an essential stop (very decent prices too) if you still care about NO music and buy cd's. Great selection of relevant book, tee shirts, and dvd's as well. Support them, buy one of their tee shirts, at least.

Was a little lost in there but in big part because I am not a music lover. If you love music, I assume this will be a wonderful place for you.
