Owner description: The New Orleans Jazz Museum celebrates jazz in the city where it was born. Through dynamic interactive exhibits, multigenerational educational programming, reaserch facilities, and engaging musical performances, the music New Orleans made famous is explored in all its forms. Housed in the historic Old U.S. Mint, strategically located at the intersection of the French Quarter and the Frenchmen Street live music corridor, the New Orleans Jazz Museum is in the heart of the city’s music scene. Through partnerships with local, national, and international educational institutions, the New Orleans Jazz Museum promotes the global understanding of jazz as one of the most innovative, historically pivotal musical art forms in world history.

Great location for Satchmo fest. A superb lineup of performers. Easy to get to. Good food within the festival and nearby. Clean bathrooms on both 1st and second floors.

Due to time limits, I only spent real time on the 2nd Floor jazz exhibitions. Wonderful to see Louise Armstrong's first cornet, a white Steinway piano owned by Fats Domino, and terrific exhibitions Pete Fountain and women of NO jazz. I did see a little of the 1st Floor mint exhibit and it did look interesting. Wish I'd had more time.

You not only get to tour the Mint but they use the second floor for other things. The history of jazz was displayed while we were there, not sure if that changes. This is a free museum!

We wandered through the museum while attending the Satchmo Summerfest Jazz Festival. Interesting to see the old cutting and stamping equipment. Nice displays of old coins produced at the site.

I visit the U.S. Mint at least 2 times a year because it is the venue for the Satchmo Festival and one fo the venues for the French Quarter Festinval. The grounds are ideal for hosting these musical events. During both of these events tours are available. If you ever go to New Orleans for either of these festivals, you'll eventually make your way to the Old U.S. Mint. On your way to the Mint, you'll pass by some other interesting places, one being the French Market.
