“Relaxing and wonderful ombiance!”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

Spent a night here for my birthday. It has old world charm and is in the midst of the french quarter. Everything is in walking distance. We had a balcony room so we went out the window and sat on the balcony to people watch. Room was clean. Breakfast was very limited. I did not eat because I noticed the person setting up the food was coughing on her hands and into a tissue and then setting up and touching food without washing her hands. There were pastries and a couple fresh fruits. All in all this was a nice stay and I would stay again just don't eat the continental breakfast.

Room Tip: Request an outside balcony if you want to watch people walking or an inside balcony if you want to o...

Beautiful spacious bedrooms surrounding a lovely courtyard. The only thing wrong with the bedrooms was that there was no netting upto the windows - which meant you had to have your curtains closed most of the time to avoid people being able to see in.

Excellent location - 2 minutes from Jackson Square.

This hotel has no bar and the complimentary breakfast was very disappointing - with only a choice of apple, muffin or croissant.

This is a very pretty old hotel. We had a shared balcony from which you could see Jackson Square and hear the great old jazz music in the street. It was a short walk to The Café Dumode for some of their wonderful beignets and just a little further to the Natchez Paddlewheel boat. This hotel is far enough from Bourbon Street to get some sleep :) and close enough to walk to if you so desire. Their is a small pool and a very pretty old courtyard and a choice of eating places within walking distance.. I would gladly stay again; the only amenity that my room did not have was a refrigerator.

Room Tip: Rooms on St. Anne Street give you a view of Jackson Sq.

PROS:

-Excellent location a block or two away from Bourbon Street but far enough away that it's quiet.

-The hotel is bursting with character. It's a beautiful old building and is quite well maintained.

-Very nice continental breakfast. The croissants and danishes were delicious.

-Beautiful garden courtyard and pool area. The pool is not large but is very clean and pretty.

-The bellboy (can't remember his name but he was quite young and had braces) could not have been any nicer or more obliging. He gave us some very helpful tips about the area and also got us an umbrella when it was raining.

CONS:

-The bathtub and tile floors need updating. The tiles had been badly patched in some areas and the tub was old and grimy looking (however, housekeeping had done an excellent job cleaning everything).

-When we arrived, the room had been cleaned but they forgot two dirty towels on the floor and a metal piece from our bathtub was sitting on the side of the tub, leaving a gaping hole.

-The toiletries were minimal and not very good. We did not receive additional toiletries the following day after our room had been serviced. They provide an all-in-one shampoo/conditioner, which is very inconvenient for 2 girls with long hair.

-The woman who checked us in was very surly. Twice I reached out to take back my ID and credit card and twice she ignored my outstretched hand and THREW the card down on the counter. She also failed to mention that there was wifi or provide us with the password. I was very irritated by the end of our encounter. However, the following day she was very pleasant to us.

Overall this is a fantastic hotel for the budget conscious traveller. It was bursting with character, very clean and in an ideal location for site seeing in the French Quarter. I would definitely stay again.

We took a chance the 1st time we stayed here 3 years ago. And we're going to stay again! The hotel location is amazing. It's in the perfect area to experience the French Quarter while still away from the noise of Bourbon Street. Café Du Monde is close by and Jackson Square is right out your door. It's an easy walk to explore the Quarter . The hotels staff is very friendly and helpful, the hotel is clean, comfortable and quaint. The courtyard is beautiful.

The reason I gave the hotel a 4 is because I stayed there a few years ago in one of the rooms to the back of the courtyard and had a fantastic experience. The room was beautiful, it was so quiet, and the staff was wonderful.
The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, the rooms are immaculate, the beds are comfortable, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the hotel is in a very central location.
This visit we stayed in room 104 - don't stay in room 104! It is in a tiled hallway - loud, by the ice and vending machines - loud at all hours of the night, and next to the breakfast room - loud beginning at 6am. We hardly got any sleep. I went to the front desk and asked to be moved and they were very gracious in storing our luggage and moving it to the new room once it was ready. Our neighbors were loud but that is not the hotel's fault but the weird thing was the giant fan pointed at the floor. When we moved the fan (because it was in an awkward location and we kept getting bruises from walking into the corner of it) there was a giant wet spot on the floor. It had been raining for days so maybe there was a leak or maybe the earlier occupants had a spill.
In spite of all of that, I still give this hotel a 4. The Place D'Armes goes above and beyond for its clientele. My advice is to take a fan (if you can) to block out some of the noise but that is my advice for every hotel in the French Quarter.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra to get a room with a window, it's worth it, especially the rooms in the back...
