“Disappointing. Wasn't anything special.”
Reviewed 29 August 2008

Just returned home from New Orleans where I stayed at the House on Bayou Road with my wife for the first three nights of our week long vacation. Upon arrival the front of the house was locked with no indication of where to go to check in. After searching for any living soul for about 10 minutes the proprietor came out the back door to finally greet us. We were then shown to our room. The room we were given was not what we had booked. We were supposed to be given a superior room but instead checked into a standard room. The room itself was quite small with no sitting area, no amenities to speak of, and an AC which didn't function for two of the three nights of our stay- this is the hottest time of the year in N.O! In other B&Bs we've stayed in they at least provided some decent bathroom amenities like shampoo and conditioner etc... Here we made a tiny bar of soap last our entire stay. Breakfast was complimentary but was lacking in many ways. There was no choice of menu whatsoever and it was assumed by the ownership that everyone staying with them would be okay with the one offering. No continental items to speak of like muffins, danishes, croissants, bisquits etc... The pool was also not in opporation for our entire stay. All in all the condition of the house and the grounds are rough around the edges. We were left with the impression that the House on Bayou Road's glory days reached their peak prior to hurricaine Katrina. There seems to be a bit of penny pinching and corner cutting to make profit margins. To add to the not so wonderful experience was a not so friendly staff. I recommend you spend your hard earned money on a hotel or B&B that will deliver upon its promises. You'll not have a hard time finding a better location elsewhere.

I had been to New Orleans before, and stayed in the French Quarter. I'm so glad I decided on a different area this time. You are still close to the Quarter, but it's so much more peaceful and pleasant. The area definitely has some blight, as well as beautiful mansions. Don't let that put you off. We felt absolutely safe. I went for a walk by myself around the neighborhood (during the day!). Taxis are prompt and inexpensive. The grounds are beautiful, with a very refreshing pool for those hot summer days! We stayed in Bayou Cane, a lovely and comfortable room. Very private and romantic. The complimentary sherry is a plus! We were planning on staying 4 nights, but ended up staying 5. Could have stayed longer if time allowed. We'll definitely be back! As an aside, if you want to hear great music, and go where many of the locals go, try Frenchman Street (close to the French Quarter, but much better IMO).

I cannot encourage you enough to book a room here. I had never been to New Orleans and looked and looked. Luckily I came across the House on Bayou Road and it was perfect. I stayed in the private cottage which has an amazing bathroom very new and updated. It was wonderful to be able to take a $5 cab ride to the French Quarter for the day but then come back to this peaceful home and get out of the chaos. The bed and linens were great and the decor perfect. The included homemade breakfast is also really, really good! It is so nice to wake up and stroll over to be served a wonderful breakfast. The staff was so personable and helpful. They suggested a great restaraunt Brigstens which was unbelievable. We loved it! If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing or romantic getaway STAY HERE!! I cannot wait to go back, my boyfriend and I absolutely loved it!

The House on Bayou Road is everything their website advertises. It is a gorgeous intimate area. Attention to detail is tremendous. The food is awesome. We stayed in the Bayou Self bungalow which is absolutely beautiful. We felt like we were in Key West. A must stay on the next trip to New Orleans. It is close enough to the quarter but enough away from the hustle and bustle. It is in an old area of New Orleans where the mom and pops set up shop when they immigrated to the U.S Angelo Bocato's bakery is a must see, the Mediterranean Cafe is scrumptious. Thank you Jane and your staff for the gracious hospitality. We will be back.

We stayed at the HOBR during Mardi Gras 2007. It was one of THE BEST travel experiences I have had. I was surprised from the moment I walked into the room how beautifully decorated it was - down to the little details like bath salts in a silver canister and a rubber ducky! :) The property took some damage from Katrina but is pretty much up and running with the exception of the gardens which are growing back. The hotel staff was wonderful - pleasant, welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was to die for - prepared fresh for each guest - including fruit and a main dish like Eggs Benedict or something equally delicious and fresh squeezed orange juice. Even though we were in one of the more affordable rooms I was so pleased with the experience that we are already planning our trip back for Mardi Gras 2008.

We stayed at the House on Bayou Road in New Orleans for three nights in the Bayou Cane room in the Kumquat house. The main house is a beautiful home with an interesting history that the owner, Cynthia will gladly share with you. Walton, the property manager was so gracious and helpful! She made made us feel at home. The room was tastefully decorated with a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. The patio outside our room was furnished with wicker chairs and sofa and looked out on the gardens, which we understand took quite a hit during hurricane Katrina, but are coming back.
The house is only a short drive from the French Quarter. Taxis are prompt in coming and inexpensive ($6.00). The breakfasts were the best we had during our entire trip! We think it was a great choice to stay in New Orleans near the action of the French Quarter, but enjoy the beauty and quiet of a historic indigo plantation house.

  • Liked — Beautiful setting, great food!
  • Disliked — The parking
  • Tips/Secrets — The main house is beautiful, but you will probably get more peace and quiet in the Kumquat house.

This review is for those anxious brides! I planeed our destination wedding all through the internet having never been to New Orleans. We, separately, took a limo from our B&B, House on Bayou Road, to City Park. We got married on the bridge located near the playground with beautiful oak trees surrounding us. Our minister was great, Rev. Samantha McGovern (loving-light) and she conducted a beautiful service, written by us. She was kind enough to bring her husband who video taped the service for free. We took a gondola ride (nolagondola)through the park which was amazing. Robert had prepared a basket of cheese and crackers and we drank champaigne! The limo then took us to Antoine's for the most perfect dinner, wait staff and private dining room. Antoine's helped us arrange for our carriage ride which then took us for a stroll through the quarter. We returned to our private cottage at the B&B, swam and sat in the hot tub...New Orleans was the perfect location! Our wedding photos were taken by Nicole Roche(NicoleRoche). I would recommend all of the above people mentioned. Even if you are not getting married consider the gondola ride!
