Owner description: Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, located in the U.S. Custom House on Canal Street, encourages you to use all five senses as you explore North America’s largest museum devoted to insects and their relatives. You’ll discover why insects are the building blocks of all life on our planet and along the way, you’ll be shrunk to bug size; wander through a mysterious Louisiana swamp; join the active audience of an awards show for bugs, by bugs; and be captivated by thousands of butterflies in an Asian garden. Voted A top museum for you and your kids by CNN, 2009.

This nifty little attraction dedicated to bugs opened about three years ago. It is located in a Federal building on Canal Street just a two blocks from the aquarium and IMAX Theatre. Since it is in a Federal building you need to go through an inspection so don't wear shoes with any metal on them or they may make you take them off to pass through. I had to do this the year it opened. The exhibits are mostly at a child's eye level so it is easy for children to see them. Allow about two hours. Toward the end of the exhibit there is a large room filled with bugs so you can see many of the wonderful designs and colours bugs come in. Also near the end is a theatre with a multi-media presentation that is fun and informative. There is a shop and a cafeteria where you can order the insect du jour. A nice addition to its sister attractions the aquarium and zoo.

OK, so not our favorite stop. Probably wouldn't have been worth it had it not been part of the package ticket we bought. Went later in the day, and by doing so the "bug tastings" were over... the butterfly exhibit is closed for refurbishment as well. Not much fun for our 6 year old girl. There were a very few insect exhibits she was interested in, and the few interactive items seemed to be in various states of disrepair...We were in and out in an hour or so...

My whole family enjoyed this museum (including the young teen), but my bug-crazy 10 year old was over the moon. The museum is on the smallish size so it won't take all day, but the exhibits are great. Don't forget to stop by the cafe to watch and taste the cooking with bugs!

The Insectarium is a great new kind of museum. Ample opportunity for the whole family- learning, touching, a chance to be grossed out, and don't forget to eat spider salsa or vanilla coated cricket. I'd save for a rainy day or couple with a visit to the Aquarium or warehouse district.

Nice insectarium, the butterfly exhibit was not open yet during our visit sadly but it was still a nice informative visit. The view on my husband's face while going through the underground portion made the trip worthwhile!
