The old Cemeteries in New Orleans are interesting to see, but if you plan on visiting any one of them, visit with one of the many tours that are offered. It will be a guided tour and it will be safe. Cemeteries in the New Orleans area are not patrolled as they should be, only at certain times and holidays. Be safe.

I have not done the other cemetery of the same name, but I was confirmed the St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 is one in the best shape. If you want to see the way the cemetry were built and have a feel of it; the #3 can really be a good one to discover.

The ARCS foundation Atlanta chapter toured this as part of a New Orleans immersion day. The cultural history and the art work of the tombs cannot be overstated. I recommend good walking shoes, respectful clothing, sunscreen and a good allocation of time. I was particularly struck by some of the carving and the obvious expense of bringing stone from as far as Italy and vermont to construct these tombs.

Learned a lot about the history of New Orleans and why most burials are done above ground. We stopped here during our tour and the guide helped us with understanding laws which are different from New York and Miami.
