“St. Louis #1 Tour - Wonderful!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

We chose Save Our Cemeteries for our tour based on reviews and on the fact they they're a non-profit organization and the money is used to help restore the cemeteries. The cost is $20 and well worth it (there are some coupons available, but it seems counter-productive to me?).

Meet at the Basin St. Visitor Center and arrive early to enjoy the exhibits and short film (do not meet at the cemetery or you'll miss the tour). They use some maps and exhibits in the visitor center to explain some history of New Orleans, which is very helpful.

Then you walk as a group to the cemetery for the tour, which lasts almost 90 minutes (suggestion: bring a bottle of water and wear a hat - it gets hot). Our guide was very informative and it was obvious he truly cared about preserving the cemeteries. Lots of insight into the local culture and customs as well as giving details of notable tombs. You could do the cemetery on your own, but you'd miss so many of the rich details and stories. I highly recommend a cemetery tour with Save Our Cemeteries - will definitely do another with them!

“Support restoration”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

I saw that there were many tours offered of this cemetery. I went with the one that supports restoration/preservation. I don't like giving to for-profits unless I have to. The tour guide was wonderful. The cemetery is is quite a state of disrepair. I was surprised of all the trash/litter in there. It really needs a shot in the arm to help preserve its history.

“Fantastic Tour”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

SOC does the best tours. All the money goes to the restoration of the cemeteries and the tour leaders are passionate about the history of the architecture and those buried there.

“Save Our Cemeteries gives a super tour of Lafayette 1 cemetery, keeping the discussion lively, interesting, but historical and a”

It's amazing how much more you can enjoy a site when you have a knowledgeable and well spoken guide to explain the history and details of what you are seeing. My husband & I had a tour with Gayle from Save our Cemeteries this morning. She did a wonderful job of telling the history, pointing out architecture, and discussing the mechanics of burial in a way that kept your attention. If was nice to know that 100% of the money paid for the tour goes to cemetery restoration (and not to a for profit organization.)

“Cemeteries Tour”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

We made our own tour of the St. Louis Cemetary #1. Happend upon a tour guide and listened in for a minute. Left a gift for the vodoo queen, knocked 3 times, spun around 3 times and wow won money at the casino later. Very interesting, but easy to get turned around in. Keep the outside walls in view and you will finally figure out how to get out.
