Owner description: A charming historic district of New Orleans dating back to the early 1800s.

Bring your camera! The Marigny is a favorite historic New Orleans neighborhood. Few tourists venture this far from the French Quarter but the Faubourg Marigny has some good eateries and interesting neighborhood bars. The architecture is amazing. At night there are music venues on Frenchmen Street and on St Claude Avenue, the two main entertainment streets in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Love New Orleans, but tired of all the barfing buffoons on Bourbon Street? On your next N'awlins trip why not skip the Quarter and visit the Faubourg Marigny instead? We did and we loved it!

The Marigny district begins just below the lower edge of the Vieux-Carre with Esplanade Avenue running between the two. Close by is the French Market and the Riverfront Line streetcar that parallels the Big Muddy and takes you to the foot of Canal where you can connect with the St. Charles Avenue and Canal Street Line streetcars.

We found very little need of venturing outside of the Marigny. This quirky district is blessed with a plethora of fine restaurants and music venues along a four block stretch of Frenchmen Street.

The Marigny caters more to local folks than tourists and the rowdy college crowd, although that is changing as more out-of-towners are discovering this charming section of the Crescent City. If you are going to go, go now while the Faubourg Marigny is still not too touristy.

Dont get me wrong, I luv the French Quarter. I've been coming to New Orleans for years now & think of myself as something of a Quarter Rat, but the Faubourg Marigny is very underrated. It's sort of like the French Quarter's shy sister ... it's not as glam or ostentatious as the Quarter, so it's easy not to notice it, but the Marigny numbers many charms of its own ... it's right next to the French Quarter, so it's still centrally & conveniently located, but it's quieter & cleaner than the French Quarter, more residential & much less touristy. I would urge people not to overlook the Faubourg Marigny. There are many B&Bs (but no big hotels) in the Marigny, & it's a gr8 place to stay or just to stroll through when you visit New Orleans.

Very interesting area but you won't get it just driving around in your car. Take a guided tour or even one of the horse-driven carriages with a knowledgeable guide.

We rented a home here for a few days and enjoyed the surroundings very much. Just strolling the streets looking at the varied architecture was fascinating. Easy walk to the French Quarter and you can leave the craziness behind you when you walk home. We would definitely stay in this area again.
