“What an experience!!”

We went on this swamp tour and had the best experience. It was informative, fun and best of all we encountered swamp life with waterfowl and lots of alligators! Our tour guide was awesome (Capt. Bishop). We are still talking about the great time we had. So glad we decided on this tour.
I would highly recommend the tour and try and get Bishop as your guide. You will not be disappointed!!

We did the swamp tour on a super rainy, miserable day of thunderstorms. We got a covered boat and were all worried that the rain would keep the alligators away--man were we wrong. We saw one of the jumbo gators almost immediately and saw 8 different ones overall, right next to the boat. I was so surprised by how many we saw! The ride itself was a blast and the wild boar/pigs were an added bonus. Our guide was hilarious and informative, I'm so glad we decided to do this. Can't recommend it enough.

“Combo tour”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

We ended up choosing Cajun Encounters for our adventures since we could get a combo tour for a pretty reasonable price. We booked the city/cemetery tour as well as the swamp tour. The arrangements were made promptly and accurately via email. Very smooth process-no mixups.
For both of our tours, we had to meet the bus at the NO visitor's centre as our hotel (Bourbon Orleans) was in the 'no bus zone'. The centre is at 901 Decatur St on the corner of Decatur and Dumaine st. Very easy to find.
Tour 1- city tour.
We met the bus at the visitor's centre. We then met up with another bigger bus that we all travelled on. I don't think some groups were able to sit together but I guess thats what happens when you travel with a crowd sometimes. Our driver and tour guide was pretty informative and funny. I wish I could remember his name. Unfortunately, we didn't do much of the cemetery part because the thunder storms started and it was raining pretty heavily. Because we missed out on this part, he took a different route and showed us around the city a little more. We stopped at the Morningside cafe where we purchased beignets, although they were not as good as Cafe DuMonde but the service was much better. I felt like I learned a lot through the tour, which was the whole point of going on it in the first place.
Tour 2- honey island swamp
We again met the bus at the visitor's centre and we were driven out to honey island swamp which was about a 45 minute drive. The driver gave us additional information on the way there. Once we arrived we lined up at the cash to get bracelets which is how they group us into boats. It is also where you pay for your tour and purchase trinkets or snacks. We were then called to the boats by our bracelet color and led down to the boat, which held 15 or so. We were taken through the swamp and our guide Chuck Sr. Told us about the history of the swamp, why there are so many alligators, how the swamp survived Katrina, houseboats, etc. There were a lot of alligators to be seen. They were coming over to the boat and they were fed with some marshmallows and hot dogs. No snakes (my husband was happy) and we didn't see any of the wild pigs that live there although Chuck tried to call them over.
The boat had a canopy which I was so thankful for because it was hot! Our bus came back to pick us up and we were dropped off where we started.
Overall Cajun Encounters was great. We found the staff to be friendly, helpful and informative.
I would recommend the swamp tour for sure. It was a big highlight of our trip.

“We encoutered disappointment and rude staff”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

The Cajun Encounters swamp tour was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel. She recommended we take the smaller boat because we would be able to see more of the swamp, however this turned out to be a disadvantage as it rained and the smaller boat had no cover on it. We missed a huge chunk of the tour because it rained and we just sat under a bridge.

When we first arrived at the Cajun Encounters station and got off the bus, they made us wait in a huge line-up, even though all of us had already purchased our tickets. It was crowded and really disorganized and they were really slow and unapologetic. A better idea would be for them to have some kind of drink bar set up or a nice seating area for customers and then have the tour guides come to you and check your information and give you a wristband. After being on a bus for 45 minutes, you don't really want to stand in a big disorganized line, especially if they already have your info from when you purchased the tickets. It just doesn't seem well thought out.

Anyway, we spent about $85 dollars each to be on this smaller boat, and after waiting in the huge line and getting our wristbands, the captain called us. The beginning of the tour was great and the captain had a lot of great information for us. His name was Captain Anthony and he was very nice and answered all of our questions. However, as we headed out into the larger area of the Bayou, large clouds came in and it began to rain. We saw some pigs and a few alligators, but then the rain came and since we did not have a cover on the small boat, he parked under a bridge to keep us dry.

Unfortunately, the rain kept up for the rest of the tour and we just sat there under the bridge. The larger boats were able to continue the tour because they had a cover over their boat, so we just sat under the bridge and watched the other boats go by. After being under the bridge for a large majority of our tour time, the tour ended.

When we got back we were really disappointed because we had spent more money on the smaller boat, but because it was uncovered we'd seen less of the tour. We asked if it was possible to get a refund, even if it was just for the difference between the price of the larger boat (which was only around $60) and the smaller boat. They called the manager out (I believe her name was MICHELLE, but I'm not entirely sure - the date we were there was June 15th, 2014) and she was extremely aggressive and rude to us. She did not listen to us, and implied we were lying by saying that it had only rained for the tail end of the tour, and that the captain said the other people in the boat had asked to stay under the bridge.

We didn't want a huge argument, so we tried to explain that we didn't feel it was right that we had paid more and seen less. In the end she said she would refund us $10 dollars each. We accepted that because there was not much else we could do, but we were not very happy or satisfied with the resolution or how she treated us. I said to my friend that the only thing we could do was write a review on trip advisor. The manager overheard me say this, and she snapped at me saying "I'm giving you ten dollars and you're still going to write a review?" I then told her we had a right to write a review regardless.

The fact is, she totally missed the point of customer service. We would have been happy with a refund of the difference between the large and small boat (about $25) and a little bit of empathy on her part (It was quite a lot of money to pay for only a partial tour). Instead, she treated us as if we had no right to ask for that, and as if her refunding us $10 should shut us up. That's just not how customer service works. Customer service is making sure the customer leaves satisfied and happy even if things went wrong or the customer was unhappy with something. Now we've left unhappy, and we're going to tell everyone we know not to use this tour company.
