We spent a week in New Orleans, went out to hear music every night and enjoyed it all. But the evening at Kermit Ruffin's Speakeasy was the best. Kermit is one of the top jazz musicians in the city and a fantastic personality. He makes a real effort to make everyone--locals and tourists--feel welcome. He is a tremendous trumpet player and has great musicians backing him up. (This included a Japanese piano player who was one of the best musicians we heard during our stay.) The evening included a bunch of great singers who contributed a few songs each. But the star is Kermit who is the Louis Armstrong of the 21st century.
We also enjoyed the food. Kermit is a cook as well as a musician and takes a lot of pride in this aspect of his club. The emphasis is on soul/creole food. It is very tasty and quite reasonable. He even has Kermit the Frog's legs on the menu, though we passed on that.
Kermit plays on Sunday and Monday nights. Things can get crowded so come early if you want a seat. Nayo Jones, a fine singer, is the regular on Friday night.

This place is a about as close as tourists will ever get off the beaten track. Not completely a local club, but does have a fair number of locals as patrons. Kermit puts on a great spread and does some of the prep work in the morning. We were staying with friends in the Lower 9th, who directed us there. His show is fabulous, and if you left without a smile, you probably didn't deserve to be in the place. I will definitely tell any friends or colleagues heading to the Big Easy about this one.

This little dive bar/club puts on a great show if you want to listen to local Jazz favorites and alumni. It is a small club, and the menu is sparce. Please eat before you arrive, because you will be hungary if you plan on eating there while enjoying the entertainment. The cover was $6, which it looked like the locals got in free. Which I am okay with that. As a business owner, you need to keep the patrons happy.

Kermit's is one of the best things you can experience in New Orleans. Great food, quality music, comfortable venue and friendly people. If you come to New Orleans don't miss it. It is less than a half mile outside of the French Quarter and a quick walk or cheap cab ride. It is like going to your corner bar and realizing that a world-class musician stopped by to perform for a few hours.

We went on a Sunday night and got to see Kermit Ruffins. He plays there Sundays and Mondays around 6:00p. We got there around 5:00p to get a table. He didn't go on until about 7:30p. But it was worth the wait. I'm guessing each of his sets is improvised and casual. It was raining the night we went and most of the first hour were songs related to the weather or rain.

It is a small venue so plan on sharing your table "family style" if you have an open seat. Seems uncomfortable but it really wasn't. The food was a good sampling of traditional New Orleans comfort food. One cool thing on the menu were the tamales. I'm a huge Mexican food fan and these were the best I've ever had. They were so unexpected I took a cab back on Monday to pick up another dozen.

The location of Kermit's club is in a neighborhood where you wonder if your car will be up on cinderblocks when you return to it but it's well worth finding to hear him play. Seating is scarce so get there early if you want to sit, particularly if you are in a group. There are many people standing to hear Kermit perform and I hope there's never an emergency in this place where people have to exit in a hurry. It is chaotic getting one of the servers to take your order for either drinks or food but it eventually gets done and it's most likely you'll have to eat standing up so many patrons get their orders in to-go containers to eat there. The men's room was pretty disgusting and the door didn't lock.

I ordered the meatloaf which came with mac and cheese and some unmemorable vegetable. It looked better when someone else had ordered it because it was bland and unfulfilling all around.

That's the negative. The positive: good acoustics, Kermit and his band playing and singing, and his constant enthusiasm as an ambassador for the city of New Orleans. One of the servers sang Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why" and did a great job and Kermit stayed after his set to greet fans and have his picture taken with them. I was with a group of volunteers rebuilding homes in McClendonville and we'd been coming annually since Katrina hit so when Mike had his photo taken with Kermit and talked to him about our week, Kermit thanked us for helping NOLA recover. Overall, a great musical night but in the future, I'd eat somewhere else.
