“Rainy Afternoon Refuge”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

I spent a great afternoon in the Hermes Bar in New Orleans. We stumbled in when the rain picked up and were very happy we did. The bartenders were very nice and we snagged a seat by the window. We tried a few different cocktails (all a bit too sweet but overall good). The two best parts of our visit here was that we ended up talking to a local who told us to try to the Pommes Frites Souffle and waved over an older gentleman to tell us the story of said souffle! Needless to say, you need to a) hear the story and b) try these strange and delicious fries!

“French Quarter's Best Kept Secret!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Pros:
Come as you are, no reservations, informal, enjoy the same menu items from Antoine's kitchen next door.
Cons:
Pricey, limited wine selection by the glass falls down on desserts, room kept too cold.
Tip:
Order the appetizer sampler for a reasonably priced tour of what the kitchen can do.

Perhaps one of the biggest secrets of the French Quarter is Hermes Bar at Antoine's. The restaurant Antoine's is one of the oldest and grandest of New Orleans restaurants. It was also one of the snootiest. Legend has it that Antoine's seated tourists in one dining room and regular clients in another room that was accessed by a separate entrance. Regular clients also had their own waiters.

Times seem to have changed now because Antoine's converted one of their dining rooms into a bar where anyone can walk in off the street without worrying about proper attire or reservations. The bar offers the same menu as Antoine's restaurant next door--at the same lofty prices, but in a more relaxed atmosphere.

We tried the appetizer sampler, soft-shell crab po-boy, Guerra Pinot Grigio, 1664 Kronenberg beer, merlot, bread pudding and Gateau Chocolat D'Yvonne. Our overall rating for Hermes is 4.5 stars. Here are the details.

Ambiance, relaxed and friendly; five stars. Room temperature, way too cold, two stars. Volume of music, way too loud but the staff did turn it down at our request. Service, five stars.

Oysters Foch, fried oysters on toasted French bread with pate, lettuce, and a rich Colbert sauce; excellent, five stars. Fried eggplant sticks, lightly fried eggplant with Hollandaise dipping sauce; very good, four stars. Shrimp remoulade, boiled Louisiana shrimp served cold in Antoine’s unique remoulade dressing; excellent, five stars. Crabmeat ravigotte, lump crabmeat served cold in a delightfully seasoned dressing; excellent, five stars. Fried soft-shell crab po-boy, one fried soft shell crab on toasted french bread with Regua sauce, lettuce, tomato, and pickles; very good, four and a half points. We drank Guerra pinot grigio; five stars.

The excellent food falls down on desserts. We had bread pudding with whiskey sauce; it was good but not excellent, four stars. For us, Drago's (in Metairie) and Tujage's in the Quarter make better versions. The chocolate gateau d'Yvonne, was sadly unremarkable and too salty--yes, too salty! Three stars here. We drank and unremarkable merlot with dessert, three stars.

This is an excellent place to pop in off the street, have a great meal in a relaxed atmosphere, and then walk to Legends Park on Bourbon street for traditional jazz music. Later for dessert, head over to Tujage's near Jackson Square.

Overall rating 4.5 stars!

“Amazing Cocktails”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

We popped into Hermes for a couple of pre-dinner cocktails and they were probably some of the best drinks we had during our time in NOLA. Not a huge cocktail list but the ones we had did not disappoint!

“Great little bar near Antoines”
Reviewed 8 April 2014 via mobile

We called in with friends for happy hour and were given an unexpected tour of the dining rooms at Antoine's which was quite amazing. This is a terrific local bar and exudes all the charm that is NOLA. We will visit again during our week long visit.
