Visit on open mic night if you can (from what I hear it's usually Monday, like when we went) and you will get blown away by the skill of the average Jill and Joe's that stand up to play. We were told that Monday was the day that most of the service industry folks in the area go out for their fun and that tip really paid off.

Okay, now for the "not feint of heart" part. Dimly lit street, side streets almost scarily dark. The bars here are not neat and tidy and well put together but they do serve great drinks and food.

THIS is the place to be if you're in New Orleans for music, food and art. What a fantastic place to explore!! I went to grab a po' boy, walked across the street to have a beer and see some funk, then repeated all night long.

Much better music bars than the collegiate Bourbon Street. There's also a fun arts fair next to the Spotted Cat Night Club.

So much better than Bourbon Street, this place is full of Art vendors, great places for drinks, and live music. My favorite was listening to Tuba Skinny play on a porch while locals danced on the sidewalk. The highlight of my NOLA trip! This is a must...

If you enjoy good music more than being bumped into by obnoxious drunks go to Frenchman Street. Easy walk from Bourbon, no covers, and real Blues and Jazz. Go!
