Description: Luke New Orleans is Besh's homage to the grand old Franco-German brasseries that once reigned in New Orleans. Luke offers an extensive French, German, and Belgian beer selection, including three exclusive house brews [custom-made in Louisiana]. The cuisine is unaffectedly Old World, using slow and traditional cooking techniques. The wine list features reds and whites from the Loire, Alsace, and Savoie regions, as well as Badischerwiens of Germany. Since opening in 2007, Luke has been hailed by Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, and The Times-Picayune Lagniappe, which awarded Luke an impressive three bean-ranking for its "disarmingly home-spun culinary touches and broad-shouldered dishes that satisfy something more than just an appetit."

“Great Creole-Inspired Seafood”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2014

I had supper here near the start of a 12-day gastro-vacation to New Orleans. First of all, the Hilton chain hotels were offering "Taste of New Orleans" room rates which would get you 20% off the bill at any John Besh restaurant in the city (except the one at the casino). If you are planning on trying all of them, the savings could equal one or two free nights, depending on the size of your party.

Crawfish were out of season, but a slightly substituted crab bisque was a great start. The baked P&J oysters would also be memorable, especially as a very nice change if you were nearing the end of a visit to the city and growing tired of endless variations of Oysters Rockefeller - I hope it's in his cookbook. Lastly, the jumbo shrimp en cocotte with sausage and grits comes in a small cast iron pan and was is another delicious one I'd like to try at home.

Speaking of which, John Besh's great coffee table cookbooks apparently can be found and purchased in all his restaurants, and are pre-autographed. A smart marketing decision.

Overall, the restaurant is nicely decorated, although the tables are fairly closely spaced. This is also not the place to go for a quiet, intimate dinner: the after-work crowd is fairly loud - not that I minded.

“Wonderful Dining Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

We ate at Lüke on a Saturday evening, our last supper in New Orleans and my birthday celebration. We began with the Seafood Gumbo, dark and rich, and the Baked P &J Oysters tasty, with a lovely crust. For our entrees we enjoyed the Shrimp and (roasted jalapeño) Grits, so creamy and delicious, and the Étouffée, very nice. We finished off our meal with dessert, Steamed Chocolate served with salted caramel ice cream and Brendan's Bread Pudding served with vanilla bean ice cream and a hot buttered pecan sauce, oh, and a candle for me. The desserts were rich and decadent and I was accused of eating more than my share. The ambience of the restaurant was relaxing, the service was wonderful. Our waiter, Ben, was personable, paid attention to detail, but was never intrusive. He helped make our evening a wonderful dining experience.

“Great service & good atmosphere.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

We wanted to try a different Besh restaurant for our trip to NoLA this time, so we settled on Luke and had no problem getting a table with same-day reservations. I was honestly a little cautious about the idea of a German/French/Creole Brasserie but looked forward to the experience. We were seated quickly and two servers promptly took care of us in tandem. We started with the Crabmeat Maison on the recommendation of our server, followed by a cup of gumbo. Both were wonderful in taste and presentation. I had the Fish of the Day (Black Drum) prepared Muniere while my partner had the Poulet Grand-Mere. Both delicious and very filling - the Poulet, in particular, was presented in a cast iron dish and looked great. Unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert but wanted it! The wine recommendation from our server was great and service was always on par. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone!

“Casual restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

A group of friends from around the country recently met in New Orleans for a reunion. We went to Luke the first night and were hooked. Everyone had a great meal and we were still talking about it the next day. I had the shrimp and jalapeno grits, and it was exceptionally good. One of the best meals I've had in New Orleans.

“Incredible food, okay service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

Our group came to Luke's twice (once for dinner, once for brunch), and the food was outstanding both times. The drinks were pretty average (they make their French 75 with cognac, which we didn't really enjoy), but the food blew us away both times. Some standouts on the menu were the gulf fish special (drum, for us, perfectly prepared), the crab omelet (incredible house made burrata in it), and the gateau basque for dessert (completely made up for the average-ness of the creme brulee [though I am a snob in that regard]). Only downside, on both accounts, was the service--slower than average, and even with reservations, we had to wait a few minutes for a table.
