“Great Place to Stay. Staff is WONDERFUL”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

At first after reading some of the reviews, I was hesitant about staying here but I was glad I did. If you are looking for a high class hotel with amenities, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a homey feeling, this is absolutely the place for you. We stayed in the Peacock Suite. A full kitchen, living room, a bedroom and a bathroom on the first floor, and then on the second floor which was a loft type there was a second bedroom and a bathroom. The inside of the place was brick since it was a old fire house which was then converted into a hotel. The staff was very friendly and gave great advice on where to go and where to eat. Our bed was always made by the time we got back and the house staff cleaned very well. This hotel is in a perfect place. Walking distance to Harrah's Casino, The Riverwalk, The French Quarter, and Canal and Bourbon Street. It was very quiet but close enough to eveything that you could walk. There was also two or three restaurants on the same block in case you did not feel like walking or going out. I was very pleased with the stay and will be staying there again the next time I return to New Orleans.

did a timeshare exchange, got this at last minute. The location is good, close to French Quater, Parade route, streetcar route, restuarants, etc. Kind of nice not to be right in the french quarter.

the unitis are dated, could use some renovations and there are not windows, the units surround an indoor courtyard. The kitchen has a full size stove, oven and microwave but a bar size fridge, which works for leftovers. the hot tub was not working while we were there, no exercise room or any amenities to speak of. Is nicer than staying in a hotel room and prime location!!!

Overall this hotel is adequate w/friendly staff and character (it is a converted firehouse) but if you are expecting a place that’s newer or a more traditional hotel with fancy linens or upscale amenities you should look elsewhere.

The staff (Kendal & Renee especially) was very accommodating & helpful to our 18 person family reunion between Christmas & New Year's calling for taxis, recommending restaurants, grocery stores, etc.. The cleaning staff would have cleaned our rooms daily if we let them. The 2nd floor atrium with the gorgeous stained glass ceiling was a great place for our group to congregate, lounge, plan our day, watch TV on a big screen & occasionally share lunch or snacks.

The rooms were sufficient with the well-stocked kitchenette handy for breakfast & snacks (the fridge is small although there is a full sz stove/oven & microwave in the loft unit & the studio we had). A few in our group found the regular beds as well as the pillows to be extremely hard/firm but I got used to mine. The sofabeds were fine to sit on but as typical, the mattresses were not great.

The biggest problem we had was in the 1BR units with the only bathroom accessible through the bedroom. Since we had children on every sofabed we had to be considerate on how we assigned rooms/beds. Plus we had 4 females in one unit & getting ready for an evening out became a challenge with their one bathroom (they could have used ours but they didn't think to ask). Our room (304?) was a 2 story unit with a loft & bathroom upstairs, master & bath downstairs w/kitchen & sitting room. The loft had a peaked roof & exposed brick with a small but workable full bathroom. We had a skylight which allowed some natural light into the room, otherwise our windows were all facing the atrium which provided good light. Other members of our group were in rooms 214 & 215 & they felt claustrophobic since there were no windows or skylights in their rooms. The remaining rooms for our party were 102 & 103 & room 103 was the studio which was probably the nicest room of all. It had high windows since it is the outside wall on the first floor plus a full kitchen.

The hot tub appears to have been out of service for awhile & is in an odd area at the back of the 1st floor near the rear entrance so I'm not sure we would have used it.

We were in the warehouse district and walked most everywhere except the Garden District. We walked to two restaurants nearby & I would highly recommend Herbsaints. We also walked to the excellent WWII museum (go early to avoid crowds) & the RiverWalk Mall which is mostly tourist shops - if you want to shop for tourist items make sure to visit the French Market - half the price and more local.

We enjoyed a sunny, peaceful afternoon taking the free ferry & walking around Algiers with a leisurely coffee & tea in a local shop.

If you want live music you mostly have to go to the French Quarter or as all the locals recommend, the area just past there. Many of the bars in the warehouse district closed by 10 or 11p during the week after Xmas which surprised us. Ernst Bar, Lucy's Retired Surfers & the 12 Bar are next door or a block or so away & 12 Bar did have music on Thursday night but we missed it since it stopped before midnight. Lucy’s usually had a crowd when we walked by but we did not stop in. The nearest grocery store, Rouse's Market, a 6 block or so walk, is mini-Whole Foods style with food to go, a nice bakery and deli, butcher, etc. & we purchased most of our breakfast & lunch food and some wine from them, including a yummy King's Cake!

I was more impressed with New Orleans this visit than my last in 2000 or so. It seems cleaner with less undesirables on the street & the smell on Bourbon St was not as bad (Dec vs May). It was bustling with all the sports activities so there were crowds at most of the popular spots like Cafe de Monde & the market to buy the best muffalettas (I forgot the name although we went there twice since they were so good). We really enjoyed our stay and I’d like to return to do more tours!

Room Tip: The studio room 103 is very nice..,specify when booking if you want windows either to the outside or...

After reading all the reviews we were also nervous about staying here but we were so surprised!! We are so happy with our room. It's a studio..room 210...we are at the end of the hall with a window, new carpet, nice bed, new sofa sleeper, cute kitchen and an upgraded bathroom. This has to have been totally refurbed because it just seems too clean. We love it!!!

The atrium area also looks upgraded. It's very clean but not used much. The hot tub has no water in it but we didn't come prepared to use it

The location is awesome. It is close to everything and we would definitely stay here again.

This sounded like a great venue but unfortunately the old converted firehouse had a number of units which had no external windows. Although there was an atrium with a glass roof the light which this supplied for the apartments made the accomodation dismal and oppressive. The fixtures and fittings need replacing as the whole demeanour of the hotel is tired and rundown.
The rooms were cleaned and linen and towels were changed most days. Ground coffee and toiletries were also regularly replaced. the bathromm was small with a shower over the bath. The bath was quite high which would make it awkward for access for anyone with mobility difficulties.
The location was very good for most places with most attractions within 10 - 15 minutes walk. These included:
Riverwalk shopping mall with shops and eating places
The Mississippi River
WW11 Museum
Trams to French Quarter
The main shopping district
The Aquarium and Imax theatre.
A selection of restaurants including Ernst's (100 yards from hotel) and Ruth's Steak bar (5 minutes walk)

It was a shame that the hotel was in need of TLC as it's position was ideal for visiting many of New Orrleans main attractions.

Room Tip: Make sure there are external windows

We stayed here for three nights and every morning they would come in to clean your
room. Little did we know but the maid was a theif. She stole a necklace that was
$350+ just for the charm. I have called (around 6 times) the hotel manager and left my phone number. She refuses to call me back. I just wanted her to know that one of her
employees was stealing. Could it be that she hires illegal aliens? This maid only spoke Spanish. I finally had to call the New Orleans police department
and I filed a report.

the staff at the front desk is polite when the mood strikes them, but can be shockingly unpleasant at times, as well. the rooms are grimy, and in disrepair. broken lampshades, peeling wallpaper, cracked tiles, the closet doors are broken, the carpet has crusty spots on it, and the jacuzzi is disgusting. it needs a visit from extreme home makeover.
