“Great hosts made my trip”
Reviewed 13 July 2014 via mobile

The location and price was great....but Hugh and Mary are phenomenal. The home was warm and welcoming with great flair and quite eclectic. I only had 48 hours in New Orleans and Hugh and Mary set an itinerary for me that gave us the true feel of the city while focusing on our interests. Highly recommended.

We were really looking forward to staying at The Banana Courtyard because of their website and the hugh amount of information that was given by Mary and Hugh. This was going to be a different experience than staying at a typical hotel. It was like staying at your grandparents' or great grandparents' house. There was a lot to take in which was great. We stayed in the Cannonball room on the 1st floor which was big enough for 3 people. The room was great, but the bathroom had no door, just a curtain. We didn't care for the refrigerator, coffee pot and microwave being in the bathroom, so we didn't use them. Mary gave us a marvelous descriptive tour for the 2 blocks to Bourbon St., which began our walk into the French Quarter. The big disappointment was that instead of staying at the B&B for the 3 nights as planned, we only stayed there for 1 night because our reserved room had been double booked. Mary did find accommodations for us up the street at a small hotel (French Quarter Courtyard Hotel) which was fantastic. We enjoyed our stay there, but sorry that we didn't get our full experience at Banana Courtyard.

Room Tip: Look at the pictures on the website and ask lots of questions.

Thank you for submitting your review of our B and B. We were so pleased that there were features that you liked about our facility, like the personalized mini-tour that we give each guest to the French Quarter and our homey, eclectic atmosphere. Sometimes that atmosphere may also provide features in individual rooms that may not meet personal preferences. We also deeply apologize for the double-booking situation and glad you were able to enjoy your stay with our colleagues at the French Quarter Courtyard Hotel. We hope you will return, so we can share with you one of our other rooms that may have features you may like, such as a whirlpool bath, scenic balcony, or fridge and microwave as part of your in-suite amenities.

We stayed for five nights in this b&b and it was a great experience. Mary and Hugh were very accommodating (and Hugh even waited for us to arrive at 3am!) and their recommendations were a helpful local perspective to the French Quarter. We stayed in the Cannonball room which is located on the ground floor, the antiquarian bed is comfortable and big. The bathroom is on the small side, but this is an old house, so that was to be expected. Everything is clean and well-maintained.

A minor quibble I would have is that the b&b is located on the edge of FQ, though they explicitly advertise being a "3-min walk to Bourbon St" which is a bit misleading. It is 3 minutes alright - but the portion of Bourbon st where all the action is would probably be a good 12/15-min walk. The closest bar would be Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop (another highly recommended bar). That being said, it is close to other fantastic places - Frenchman st, Buffas bar, and especially - Port of Call!

One final tip: Stanley, the resident airport pickup, also does scheduled transportation for other purposes. Its a huge help if one needs to go somewhere and a regular taxi is not feasible - plus he can give you a bonus commentary on different parts of the city...

Room Tip: go for the Cannonball or Hexagonal rooms - these are the biggest ones and both are located on the gr...

We stayed at the Banana Courtyard in May 2014. A one word description of the property would have to be eclectic. Hugh and Mary were wonderful hosts and very happy to help out with info on where to go and what to do. You'll be within walking distance of the French Quarter and there is also a bus stop across the street. You can purchase a day pass and ride the bus as many times as you need to. But since the Banana Courtyard is a museum itself, plan to spend a little time looking around there as well as all of the other attractions in the Crescent City. I also can't say enough about Gerald - if Hugh is not around, he'll be more than happy to help with your stay. And I almost forgot to mention the world's smallest bathroom....

Room Tip: The rooms on the bottom floor were furnished in a more vintage style than the rooms upstairs.

We found the Banana Courtyard on the internet and couldn't have enjoyed it more. Hugh and Mary add to the experience of staying in an 1800's former bordello. We were there for a week and all the others staying here were our family for the week! A fun time in the French Quarter!!!

We stayed for six nights at The Banana Courtyard B&B (31th of May to 7th of June). It is a wonderful place! It's like coming home. The hosts, Mary and Hugh, are a lovely couple and they their suggestions on activities really were spot on and helped us to have a even more wonderful stay in NOLA on our honeymoon.

If you expect to have a stay similar to a hotel, then maybe this is not the stay for you. But if you want to have a lovely experience of great southern hospitality and have a nice stay just a couple of minutes walk from the centre of the French Quarter - this is definitely the best place to be. Banana Courtyard = charming, central, quiet, generous, interesting, cozy, lovely etc. I can assure that a stay here will be very pleasant - we loved it!

For our first visit to NOLA, we wanted as much of an authentic experience as possible. We generally love the homey feel of staying in bed and breakfasts when we travel, and we researched A LOT before landing on the Banana Courtyard. Upon arrival, Mary was standing outside waiting to welcome us (even though it was well after 10pm). She also walked us down to Bourbon St to give us a general lay of the land which was so awesome. It immediately felt like visiting family. In fact, when we encountered new guests arriving, we were so excited to welcome them to our collective little home away from home. The house is full of antiques and creaky wood and we just adored the vaguely old-timey voodoo vibe of the place! If you love sleek hotels, this is not for you. If you appreciate historic buildings and immersing yourself in feeling like a LOCAL, you will fall in love. The rooms were comfortable, quirky, and clean. The location was just right (on the edge of the French Quarter where it's nice and quiet for a good sleep at the end of a long night out). Mary and Hugh were eager to chat and help with random things such as calling for cabs or suggesting places to see. MAJOR BONUS of staying with people who truly love their house and guests: apparently we had overpaid for our two rooms and Mary left messages on two of our cell phones as soon as she realized. When we next saw her she handed us the overage in an envelope with an excited comment something to the effect of "check it out! more spending money!" These are honest, caring people. They love their city and helped us to have a really memorable time.

Room Tip: We were travelling as a trio: my husband and I had the Madame Steamboat Room, and my sister had the...
