A couple of girlfriends and I had been to New Orleans before and we had such a wonderful time we wanted to go back but this time we decided to look into bed and breakfasts. We chose this one because it was very reasonably priced compared to the others and the location. When we called to book a room she (Mary, aka. the banana lady) didn't realize we were asking for three people instead of two when she quoted us the price but since we were quoted the wrong price initially even though we should have mentioned the number of guests first she deducted $10 off the extra person charge. We also were AAA members and she said that since the summer rates were already so discounted she couldn't give us that discount but she did give us free parking which also saved us quite a great deal of money. She also sent tons of pages on restaurants, places to go and see, and music venues with reviews for each so it was like we had our own free guidebook to NOLA which was fantastic!! I couldn't believe how much effort they put in for their guests.

Before we got there I actually read the negative reviews on this site and got quite scared and was afraid we made a really bad choice. They said things like the service, the rooms, the breakfast, and the location and safety of the area were all lacking in quality. However, we found that to not be the case by an extreme long shot! My group of friends and I are all in our early 20's but we aren't really the Burboun street, wild and crazy crowd and last time we came we were really enamored with Frenchman street which has all the great jazz clubs and a more local and chill crowd. The location was absolutely perfect for that! It was within a 5 minute walk to Frenchman and Cafe Dumond and right next to the French Quarter as well. We didn't find there to be any safety issues for us at all either, we never felt uncomfortable and for a couple of young girls that was really important.

They offered us the free drink when we got in but we were so tired we decided to take a rain check, but there was always a stock of sodas and bottled water for us to take, coupons and even umbrellas in case it rained! Mary and Hugh were so friendly and thoughtful, we got lost coming and Mary met us outside in her robe to direct us in while Hugh stayed on the phone with us until we got there. Also, any questions we had to ask were answered in details with directions and explanations, I couldn't have expected family to have treated us any better! They were the sweetest hosts and the rooms were so cute and everything we needed was provided for us. I will never stay any place else when I come back to New Orleans!

Our 4 day stay at the Banana Courtyard was fabulous.
The room was comfortable and quiet and cool.
The hospitality was incredible and always available to
answer questions and take care of our needs.
After long days it was breathtaking to return to our room.

My husband and I stayed here during our honeymoon. We had a long drive and arrived a little on the late side, but Mary braved the cold weather and was waiting for us near the gate. She and Hugh were very gracious and had everything listed and mapped out for us. The binder they provided was wonderful, great for people from out of town wanting to go to some places not so "touristy". It was also personalized for us with congratulations for our wedding (very nice touch). The weather turned very cold (the temperature dropped about 20 degrees from the time our wedding ended and the time we got into New Orleans) and I didn't plan well, so I didn't have a jacket to wear. Mary lent me her nice jacket to wear (knowing full well we were going down Burbon St later that night) and offered to bring us to where we wanted to go.

We liked the place so much we lengthened our stay. As for some of the previous reviews as to the rooms being too small, there were tons of pictures on the website and as to the complaints about the decorations, again, there were tons of pictures of the house and rooms, and well....its not your average place. It's got character, thats the point of staying at a place like that. We wanted to stay somewhere a little different, and it was wonderful, we will certainly be returning.

Right on the edge of the French Quarter and the Treme neighborhood, easy walk (15 mins) to everything in the Quarter! Great hosts extremely gracious! New Orleans in summer, hot, sticky and delightful. The courtyard was everything it was billed to be, clean rooms, a cool respite. Mary and Hugh try very hard to make your experience a real treat. Enjoy the porch swing with a rum and coke!

I recently stayed at the B&B and I was disappointed in what I got for the price that I paid almost 200 a night. The location was a good walk from the main night life of the city. The rooms were not well cleaned and getting towels was a problem. There was to much of a hassel to lock this door and lock that door, and look the gate. Breakfast was a joke which consisted of almost over ripe fruit and a variety of diffrent breads and jams. Also along with room fees parking at this facility was another expense. The only thing I can say good about this B&B is that Mary was very helpful and nice. I wouldn't recommend that anyone stays here because you dont get what you pay for.

We have stayed at a lot of different B&Bs around the country and usually prefer them to hotels. This place, however, was a disappointment. We did not feel safe walking around the place, especially at night. The rooms are filled with very tacky decorations (not at ALL a romantic environment). Also, while the owners claim that cooking is not allowed in a B&B in New Orleans, several other B&Bs where we have stayed serve delicious hot cooked food for breakfast (Ashton's, Sully Mansion) so I'm not sure what the deal is. There was not really a selection for breakfast; there were bananas and toast and a selection of jams. Although we would not stay here again, we would definitely call Stanley to pick us up again. He was the best part of the trip.

We stayed in the Banana Courtyard for 9 nights and would recommend it to everyone who prefers personal service to the soulless fodder provided by hotels. If you are seeking impersonal, sterile identical rooms, then by all means stay away from the Banana Courtyard and keep this place special for people who love eccentricity and individuality.

Vive la différence

We loved EVERYTHING about it, from our wonderful hosts Mary (aka The Banana Lady), Hugh, Gerald and Chelsea (who all went above and beyond the call of duty) to the marvelously decorated rooms and Stanley the Taxi driver.
Air conditioned, ceiling fans, water, fruit and soft drinks 24 hours a day - own fridge for doggy bags, and on tap coffee...what more could you ask for!
We have to go back because there is no way we have seen everything on the walls and in the nooks and crannies in this house. The whole place (A former Bordello) has history and an abundance of charm.
Located just on the outer edge of and within walking distance of the French Quarter, we felt safe and cosseted.

A huge thank you to everyone for making our trip the most memorable yet.

Wow. All of a sudden all these old reviews popped up that I never saw before. The review sounds so good its like a publicist. We appreciate your very kind words.

Thanks for individually thanking staff, as they are the ones that are the backbone of the b&B. Without their enthusiasm, going above and beyond the service you get in fine hotels, and sharing info on our city with guests, we would not have so many great reviews like yours.

And Stanley, who has the car service many innkeepers us, may be the only taxicab driver in USA who guests hug when he drops them off at the B&B.

Bye from the banana lady
