“We had the time of our lives while staying here during Mardi Gras!”
Reviewed 28 February 2012

We recently stayed at the House of the Rising Sun B&B during the Mardi Gras holiday and it was awesome. The location was convenient to everything and was only a short ride across the river on the free (for pedestrians) ferry. Kevin and Wendy were the perfect hosts. By the time we left we truly felt as if we'd made new friends. Can't wait to return. Thanks Kevin and Wendy for the best vacation we've had in years!!

We had a great time at NOLA. It was our first time and it was Mardi Gras too. One item we checked off from our bucket list. Kevin was wonderful. He even waited for us until 12MN (flight got delayed). Sorry Kevin :( The place was clean and it was quiet. Bed was comfy. We loved the house, especially the location.
Its only a 3 min walk to the ferry. A 5 min ferry ride directly to the French Quarter. This place is retreat from the madness happening at Bourbon Street. I enjoyed waking up early and running along the levee looking out at the mighty Mississippi River. Such an awesome sight. We would love to go back and stay again at the House of the Rising Sun BnB. I'm not surprised that people leave great comments about this place.
Don't want to miss the part that our hosts Kevin and Wendy were very nice.

Room Tip: The Red room, had the King size bed but the bathroom is not adjacent to the room, its private though...

Kevin, the owner, was a gracious Southern host with an English accent. He greeted us along with his rescue pup "Boudin" upon arrival. Combined with an easy walk to (3 min.) and ride across the ferry into downtown New Orleans (10 min.), it made this a comfortable trip for a weekend Mardi Gras parade and cooking school. Would definitely stay again. The Algiers point neighborhood reminded me of Key West-- friendly people, all of them seem to have dogs; many of the pets joined the locals at the Crown and Anchor pub, just two blocks away.

We almost never stay in one place for more than a couple of nights, so it was a treat to stay put for seven nights here. The historic Algiers neighborhood has some beautiful houses with nice Mardi Gras decorations. House of the Rising Sun isn't as luxurious as some B&Bs where we've stayed, but it's clean, comfortable and quiet, and Kevin is very hospitable. The routine breakfast of cut fresh fruit with yogurt and granola was healthy and tasty. For this long of a stay, we were glad to have a car so that we could do a plantation tour and a swamp tour (yes, you could catch one at a hotel across the river, but we enjoyed doing things on our own schedule.) For a shorter stay, you wouldn't need a car -- the quick ferry ride makes for about a 15-minute walk/ride commute to the French Quarter. Highly recommend the shrimp po'boy, bread pudding and the Sat. night live jazz by "Some Like it Hot" at the Dry Dock, across the street from the ferry in Algiers. Bread pudding was the best we had in NOLA. Enjoyed visiting with Kevin and guests from Toronto, North Carolina and Wisconsin (small world -- the Wisconsin guests knew someone we know.) Currently there is debate about whether to continue funding the ferry, largely through bridge tolls -- hopefully this is resolved satisfactorily, as it'd be a shame to lose the easy accessibility to Algiers. Plan to return for Super Bowl 2013 if the Packers make it!

It's so nice that after all day walking and crazy parades, we can go back to our clean and quiet room to have a good night sleep, the free ferry makes it easy. The algiers point cafe' and the restaurant "vine-and-dine" near the dock both serve good food, the bar a few blocks further even has draft English cider! What a nice surprise! Kevin and Wendy are both very nice and helpful, they made our first trip to NO like a local. Their dog boudin is so cute and always keeps me company in the back yard. It's nice to talk to Kevin and I enjoy his British humour :D

One reminder: If you get the king room, there's a private bathroom out side of the room. It's still convenient but it's better to bring your own slippers, that'll make it even easier. Oh, and please go to preservation hall for the music, it's really killing.

If I'm going to NO again, I'll stay here for sure. :)

Comfortable bed, good breakfast, interesting conversation with Kevin. Beautiful historic neighborhood and the ferry ride to Canal Street made traveling so easy. Crown & Anchor bar is old and a true bar. Mike loved the porter selection. The coffee shop around the corner felt like one in any college town. we had a wonderful time.

I surprised my girlfriend with a trip to New Orleans and picked this BnB for its high rating, location, affordability, and of course the awesome name. It lived up to is billing. Kevin went above and beyond to accommodate us, and I really owe him one! Algiers is lovely, and the journey to the pier and on the ferry across to the French Quarter is pleasant as well. Loved our Japanese themed room, the fruit salad, the funny breakfast table stories, and the king-size bed!

Will definitely recommend to my friends and return.

Thanks!
