THE HOTEL - The Bourbon Orleans is located in the middle of the French Quarter, within 10 minutes' walk to all the main sites. Interior rooms were insulated from the nightly noise on Bourbon Street. The staff members were all friendly and they greeted you at the entrance with a "welcome back." The rooms were large and comfortable, along the lines of a 4-star hotel. Many rooms are adjoining, however, and you may pick up noise through the doors if your neighbors are loud talkers. The fitness room has 6 treadmills/bikes/stair climbers, and a few free weights. The central lobby was tastefully decorated (in Christmas decor until Jan 7th). They had free coffee in the mornings and free USA Todays. Front desk staffers were always helpful when the concierge was off duty. Beds were comfortable, although bring a flat pillow. Theirs were fairly thick and had to be flattened out.
THE AREA - There is too much to cover adequately, but here are a few tips. Bourbon Street is the Mardi Gras party street. Royal Street has the higher-end stores like antiques, books, furniture, and the like. Decatur Street (runs along the river) is the touristy cruise-shop zone, but with many interesting stores to browse. Here are some restaurants that we sampled, all three of which had (unfounded) negative reviews on Yelp. Antoine's - A 4-star restaurant with 12+ rooms in a mansion dating to 1840; very good food, excellent service, center of French Quarter activity, pricey. Court of Two Sisters - A 3 1/2-star place with indoor/outdoor seating for (mainly) buffet brunch; excellent selection, live jazz bands daily, $29 pp but worth it if you can stay for an hour or more. Emeril's Delmonico Steaks - A 3 1/2-star steak restaurant located 3/4 mile west of the FQ; very good food, excellent service, pricey; take the trolley if you don't want to walk it. Don't miss seeing live jazz at Preservation Hall, located 1 1/2 blocks from the hotel. Three sets nightly; $15pp cash at the door; 100 people in a rustic jazz hall with fewer than 50 seats, so get there early.
