Stayed here for 5 nights, August 2012. We had booked a standard room but were given a suite comprising a downstairs living room / toilet, and an upstairs bedroom / bathroom. This room was furnished nicely and seemed clean and comfortable however when we tried to sleep we felt very uncomfortable and switched the light back on to see cockroaches on the curtain pelmet. This was a bit off-putting to say the least and coupled with the fact that there was no natural light in the room, we decided to move. In the middle of the night. So that kind of tells you how uncomfortable this room was. We asked the night receptionist to change rooms and he was lovely and very accommodating, and changed us to another suite, this time all on one level.
We shifted our stuff and found that room to be much better - well no cockroaches at least. The room was at the front of the hotel and so had the long ornate metal balcony and green shutters which made it very picturesque from the outside. Inside however the room did have a slightly musty smell and the furniture was huge and a bit dated and creaky. It felt a bit like sleeping in a stately home. Which might be a good or bad thing depending on your taste! The worst thing was the bed which was extremely uncomfortable. It had a dip in the middle which meant we rolled towards each other - not great in the heat of the New Orleans night! The room seemed very clean but my husband did receive over 20 insect bites, not sure if this was a mosquito, a flea, a bed bug or what...
The pool area and courtyard areas of the hotel were lovely and refreshing, and very peaceful. The pool only had about 6 loungers but was never busy, so perhaps 6 is all they need.
Breakfast was bagels / bread / cereals / fruit / muffins / pastries / coffee / tea / juice - plentiful and fresh.
The location of the hotel was excellent - right in the heart of the French Quarter but not too near the noise of Bourbon Street - it was approx 5 mins walk to Bourbon Street but very quiet and peaceful.
The staff in the hotel were excellent. Best thing about it really. Every person we dealt with was very professional and efficient and most importantly very friendly. We felt welcomed and the hotel felt like an informal and relaxed place to be. Can't fault the staff.
I think the hotel is currently being updated and I think it really needs it. It also could do with a bit more pest control, although I guess in the New Orleans climate, roaches etc are to be expected.
If you go here then request a standard room overlooking the pool as they seem to be the most recently updated.
