“Enjoyed the hotel again”
Reviewed 24 July 2010

My grandson (12 yo) and I just finished a four night stay at the hotel. I have to walk with a cane and they were able to give us a ground floor room which made things much easier for me (pawpaw). My wife and I stayed there last Thanksgiving. I used to have an apartment just around the corner from the hotel. Both stays have been very enjoyable. If you're looking for a 5 star hotel, then don't stay here. This property is a great older hotel within easy reach of many restaurants, entertainment, and public transportation. I don't like muffins, so every morning (grandson is still sleeping) at 6:30 I would walk around the corner to a great french bakery and get some pastries and the Times-Picayune and sit in the courtyard, read the paper, and then use the wi-fi connection to surf. I just don't have anything negative to sday about the hotel. My grandson enjoyed a swim each late afternoon.

We were really enjoying our stay, everybody was very helpful until the last day of our visit. We had added a day on a couple of weeks ago and we confirmed when we checked in. However, nobody told us we were going to be required to change rooms for the last day. We happened to stop by to get our car around 3 PM and found that out. We had told them in a previous phone call and on our first day that we did not want building 5, but lo and behold that is where they were sending us. So we cancelled and left. Unfortunately for all the quaintness, there was a communication gaffe and also no apology by Robert to even try to work it out. It was "it is our only room, take it or leave it". We will not be returning.

This hotel is cute and very "New Orleans". The rooms are very basic, typical NOLA rooms. We have to remember that the city is very touristy so the rooms do get a lot of wear and tear, and if you're on a budget this is a fine choice for lodging. The location is excellent! Here are some specifics that you find helpful:
- Pros: Our bed was quite comfortable and we were able to keep the temperature at a nice level. There were lots of little places to sit and relax, especially in the morning with a cup of coffee and pastry. The continental breakfast they do is a nice little touch. Go exploring around the hotel - there is more to this place than you think, lots of little hidden courtyards.
- Cons: Our bathroom was in need of a remodel. The floor of the tub/shower felt unstable and everything was just a little dingy (or maybe "worn" is a better word). There was no in room safe, although there are small (and I mean small) safes behind the lobby desk for guests use. If you have anything like a laptop or professional camera that you want to put away, you're out of luck. Another downside for us was no minibar/fridge in the room and no kind of bar/lounge in the hotel. This is a big con for me because my husband and I like to have a drink and talk about our day before we get ready for dinner and nightlife.
If you stay here, I would suggest requesting a room that does not overlook the street or alley or sit on top of the restaurant next door. [As a quick aside, the restaurant next door (Stella) is great as is its brother restaurant (Stanley). Go to Stanley for brunch.] If you have a room in any of these locations, don't plan on sleeping in. They get very loud, very early in the morning with deliveries and trash pick-up.
To end on a positive note, I would certainly recommend this hotel to a friend who was looking for a place to stay in the quarter without having to spend a fortune. It was a pleasant place to stay and everyone who worked there was very friendly.

Our 4 night stay at the Hotel Provincial could not have been more charming. Our 3 standard rooms were filled with antique furnishings and the beds were very comfortable. One could sit with the windows open to the street below or cool off in air-conditioned comfort. The location at the edge of the French Quarter/French Market was perfect for walking/shopping and not far from streetcar stops to explore further out. The staff was always very friendly--continually keeping the property clean; the continental breakfast satisfying, and the pool especially inviting in the summer heat. We enjoyed sitting in the little courtyard for breakfast and again in the evening. We also enjoyed eavesdropping on the ghost tours each night, as they described all that had happened in our old Civil War hospital building many years ago. We highly recommend this property and also suggest "The Praline Connection" restaurant--just a couple blocks away too--for great Southern food.

I have stayed at the Hotel Provincial many times over the last 20 years or so and am always delighted to find the staff so friendly and helpful. The location in the Quarter is great and on-site parking is a big plus for those of us in Louisiana who drive into the city. I almost hate to rave about the Provincial as I may never again be able to get a reservation when I get the urge to visit my favorite city.

Our room was spacious and comfortable with lovely antique (but not outdated!) furniture. The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed a quiet, restful night. We had three closets and the bathroom and sink were separated, making the area quite large. We also liked the flat screen HD television. I would DEFINITELY recommend requesting a "double deluxe" room, as the standard doubles seem to be quite narrow. We really liked the staff and they were incredibly helpful with helping us make tour reservations and finding good local restaurants. My only complaint is that the water faucets seem to have had a switcheroo - the hot water came from the cold faucet and the cold came from the hot! Oh, and we saw absolutely NO ghosts! :)

I've been to NO quite a few times - usually stay at Place D'Armes (great hotel). Wanted to try something different this time - chose Hotel Provincial. We had a room at the front of the hotel overlooking the street - very noisy at night (walls are seriously paper-thin). Lots of kids visiting the same time we were and the hotel courtyard was filled with teenagers from a school trip that made a lot of noise during early morning hours (1:30a.m.!) in the courtyard with no warning from the front desk (which is located adjacent to the courtyard ) to keep the noise level down per their posted signs indicating that the courtyard closes at 11p.m. Towels were rationed to the point where we would only get 1 towel each day and had to request more (hand towels, wash cloths, etc.). On our first night at the hotel, two cop cars had apprehended a seedy looking character right across the street from the hotel. The next night - 2 more cop cars at the other corner. We thought this would be a quiet and safe location, but next time will return to the Place D'Armes or try another hotel in the French Quarter. Don't get a room near the swimming pool - that was packed with people and it was LOUD, LOUD, LOUD all day and night!

Occasionally, we do have student groups who visit New Orleans to help with the rebuilding effort. While we have policies in place to minimize the impact these sorts of groups have on other guests, they can still be a bit noisy. Unfortunately, it appears we did not do a very good job during this guest's visit. We have addressed this issue internally and have made changes that will allow us to better handle student groups in the future.
