“Historic Hospital converted to hospitable hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2011

Hotel Provincial consists of several buildings centrally located, yet quiet, in the French Quarter. Our room was in the lobby building, which was a hospital. At registration, the staff welcomed us and offered to help with dinner reservations. Our room was in the hospital building, two stories, with a central courtyard seating area and pool. There were two queen beds, a dressing area and shower/toilet combo. Continental breakfast is served in the lobby, with patio seating.
Jackson Square is three short blocks away. Stellas' Restaurant is in the hotel and Irene's Restaurant is around the corner.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Provincial for 2 nights over last weekend. We were quickly checked in (very friendly staff greeted us) .We were shown to our room which was on the first floor "overlooking the court" . However once inside the room we realized the room had no windows. It felt extremely claustrophobic. They did make every effort to find a more suitable room for us and we wound up in the 500 building on the second floor, overlooking Decatur Street. We had a large floor to ceiling window which opened up to a balcony where were able to enjoy breakfast our last day (it was too chilly the other days). We watched the horse and buggies go by and really enjoyed it. We were very glad that we asked to have our roomed changed or we would not have enjoyed our stay nearly as much.
The continental breakfast and coffee in the lobby is convenient, but do make your way around the corner for a delicious breakfast of pastries, quiche lorraine and coffee. We loved the tile work and local artwork hanging the shop.
The hotel is very convenient to the French Market and other French Quarter highlights. Stell restaurant is adjacent to the hotel. We did not eat there, due to our short stay, but have something to look forward to next time (We hear it is excellcent !!)
If you are looking for a modern up to date hotel with lots of emenities, this is not it. However, it nicely furnished, clean rooms, in historic buildings and an excellent location.

This hotel is historic, clean, very nice! We had a room overlooking Chartres St. and thought it would be noisy, but was only moderately so. We slept well. We enjoyed the louvered doors that opened to a wrought iron railing. It was great to watch the mule-drawn buggies going by, hearing their clip-clop, so you knew they were coming!
The room was average in size, with a comfortable pillow-top mattress. It had a flat-screen tv. They had a decent continental breakfast in the lobby. There was a computer for guests to use in the lobby, with fast internet service. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We spoke to a bellman when we were leaving, as we'd heard the hotel was haunted. He said the older building in the back was a Civil War hospital, and rumors are that it is haunted! We didn't find out!
Very much enjoyed our stay! Definitely would recommend. This is a good location for walking almost anywhere in the French Quarter, but is only one block from the French Market, and maybe 2 blocks to the streetcar.

We stayed here for 2 nights in 2 different rooms. The first, room 311, I had to ask to be moved from. It was literally in a stair well. You could hear people walking up and down the creaky stairs all the time, and even though the ceiling was very high it just felt claustrphobic. Our second room, in the 100 building, was much better but still seemed kind of dark as the only windows are those on your door. It was clean though, and the reservation manager was kind enough to switch our rooms for us.

We stayed there December 26th through the 30th. The prices were $69 for one night and $89 for the other three nights. We had a room overlooking the parking lot (which was not bad since we could see if our relatives were there yet). Mainly we saw other roofs.

We stayed in room 535 which is said that the 500 building is haunted since it use to be a confederate hospital. We did get a strange picture (which I will include).

Breakfast was fine. I loved their big muffins. They also had coffee, juice, eggs, rolls and bagels.

We were within three blocks of Jackson Square and a block to the Urseline Convent and Beuregard/Keys house.

You could hear the people next door at times. They did forget to bring us soap for the first night. Not a biggie.

We would like to stay there again.

My wife, 21 year old daughter, and myself just got back from a 5 night stay at the Hotel Provoncial in New Orleans. The hotel is a great place for families. The staff is attentive and friendly, the location is convenient, it is clean, safe, and reasonable in price. The breakfast, which is included in the room price, is nothing to write home about, but in a city with so many great places to eat, this is a minor gripe. We have stayed at this hotel twice now, and will do so again the next time we visit NO.

We actually had two rooms, one with a king bed and the other with double beds for two college aged boys.
It actually has different buildings with the 100-200 rooms being in the front area the 300, 400 and 500 buildings. We stayed in the 500 building which is actually on Decatur Street. However there is no "short cut" to get from the 500 building to Decatur Street so if you have the street side rooms you can look out onto Decatur but have to walk two blocks to get to a place 10 feet away.
Pros: The Provincial is in the middle of the French Quarter so all of the attractions within easy walking distance. The bed was very nice and made it easy to sleep. There are four rooms that share a balcony onto Decatur Street on the second floor, We had two of those rooms. The view is out onto Latrobe Park but you can see up and down Decatur and N. Peter Street. During the day there is live music being played at a cafe across the street which I liked. There is a updated flat screen TV in the room with a full array of channel options. The breakfast in the morning is not fancy but it was all we needed, muffins, juice, coffee, bagels (with toaster), danish, boiled eggs and fruit. The valet parking was always quick about getting the car back to the front and your vehicle is actually in the parking lot which is in the middle of the different buildings so you can get items out of it when you need to do so. The rooms were clean and the maid service did a good job at getting the rooms ready. All of the staff we met were friendly and more than willing to help if needed. The price was better than most we checked out in the Quarter and the we got the parking at half-price ($11.00 per day) due to getting the reservations in about five months in advance. Check out there website for parking specials!! While the other rooms on the floor were being cleaned we noticed that it appears that all of the rooms are slightly different in layout.
The maybe not pros but not cons: The tours and some websites say that the Provincial is haunted. and the 500 building is the most haunted! We didn't see or hear any spirits. As I mentioned the rooms seem to be slightly different in layout. With a king size bed the room we stayed in was cramped with very little walking area between the end of the bed and the table and two chairs along the far wall. To get out onto the balcony you go out the window. I am not as flexible as I used to be but didn't have trouble since the window is large and goes all of the way to the floor. The bathroom is not large but large enough to get around in without tripping over the toilet or tub. There is a hair dryer and ironing board with iron in the closet, which is in the bathroom area.
I said that we did not see or hear any spirits but our room card keys quit working three separate times. The first time the service staff was there so she tried her card and it wouldn't work as well as a maintenance person's. Finally the front desk made new cards which worked. The second and third times I just went to the front desk and they made new cards. I could have called the front from the elevator phone but didn't. Also one night the water just quit working in the tub and was greatly reduced in the sink. A call to the front desk and it was running fine later. I just wonder if this happens all of the time to all the rooms or just to rooms in the 500 building? Playful spirits?
Cons: The wireless internet is sporadic at best and just plain doesn't work at worst which was most of the time. You can not count on it if you plan to do any business while here. It wasn't just our room, I talked to others in the complex and they has similar problems. One lady was using her laptop in the lobby because she couldn't get it to connect even though she said she was practically sitting on the router. Maybe they should invest in better quality routers used for commercial applications.
Other: Stella, the restaurant is part of the complex but we did not eat there, it is on the high end cost wise but is rated very highly. Since it was so cold we did not use the pool. There are at least three court yards in the various buildings and a second pool as well.
I would stay there again but I liked the balcony on Decatur Street and there are only four of those rooms. During the night the noise was not enough to keep us from sleeping. About 9-10 am the guy at Latrobe Park likes to use his leaf blower though.
