“Nice hotel, great service, clean rooms”
Reviewed 9 January 2014

Really liked staying here, it's quiet. The Carousel bar is a little dated, they definitely stick to the script and you won't find new or exciting craft cocktails here, but the drinks are very nice. Definitely a great choice for older 50 something on a business trip crowd. Very quiet. Which we liked a lot.
Didn't like that the concierge seemed to be of the opinion that going anywhere outside of the French Quarter is akin to claiming the earth is round. Many of the concierge in many FQ hotels will give themselves apoplexy trying to keep you from going outside of the prescribed tourist bridle path. Yes, act like an idiot and trouble will find you, but use common sense and you can have a GREAT time.
New Orleans has SO much to offer, We went to see HOT 8 Brass Band at Howlin Wolf, Kermit Ruffins at Bullet's, had excellent dinners at Jacques Imos and Maurepas Foods, did some vintage shopping on Magazine and some drinking on Saint Charles. All of the above destinations were met with stern and dire warnings from the concierge as well as all of the cabbies. You definitely get the sense that someone somewhere is getting a kickback for recommending the same ol same ol. It is a wasted trip to go to this incredible city and stick to the Disney-McDonald's-Corporate-old guard-pre packaged for your convenience-Quarter. Not to say you should run around waving your wallet while walking alone through the CBD at night. That's just dumb. But the hotel was nice and we'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The higher the room, the quieter your sleep will be. That's just a hotel rule of thumb.

Here for a business trip, so no choice on hotel. Nice rooms, but most of the group waited hours for their rooms. Conference facility good, and roof top pool very nice for breaks during meeting. Unfortunate that the ability to turn the rooms and get people in was so difficult. May have been just the date- Saints/Cowboys game- so if you are looking for good location to all the French Quarter, would still recommend hotel when you can get it at a reasonable price.

My husband and I have stayed at the Monteleone during Christmas holidays for the past several years. On the whole, the hotel is lovely - the Carousel Bar is a big hit with tourists, and it's on Royal St. in the heart of the French Quarter. We came in on Christmas Eve, and since I requested early upon reservation a few months prior, a check-in early after our long road trip from Chicago, they had a room available for us, which was great.

It is an older hotel, so the rooms are smaller than your modern, more expensive hotels, but they are nicely furnished, with Keurig coffee machines in the rooms now instead of the more traditional small coffee makers, which was a nice touch.

This hotel allows dogs - $100 non-refundable deposit, plus $25/day. Kind of the norm for most nicer hotels allowing dogs

There is a designated dog floor on the 3rd floor. Our old dog stayed here, and our current dog got his first Christmas here. IF needed, they can provide a water/food bowl upon request (we had our own stuff, so didn't need it). Not every hotel in the French Quarter is dog-friendly, or if they are, there is a weight limit, usually on the very small always get attention from other visitors staying there.

There is an exercise room on the 16th floor, with an outdoor heated pool overlooking Decatur St. and the Mississsippi River, which is nice. The exercise room is small, with several elliptical machines, some treadmills and weight machines. The weight machines were a bit awkward for me (different from the ones used in my gym back home), but the LifeFitness treadmill was great.

Location is great, close to all things in the quarter. They do have valet parking at $35/day, and since we drove to visit family nearby, it was good to have that option, albeit pricey (but the norm for the Quarter), but then again, parking is at a real premium in the Quarter, so indoor parking is a good thing.

We will be staying there again when we come back in '15, and plan to do so whenever we travel with our dog. Service is great, and friendly too. Highly recommend it.

Room Tip: If you have a pet, the 3rd floor is the designated pet floor

I have always wanted to stay here after I stumbled upon the Carousel Bar on a trip to NO. The bar literally looks like a carousel, and the chairs rotate around the bar in the center - very fun. Great location - everything is within walking distance. Mr. B's across the street is an amazing restaurant, as is Criollo which is onsite. You are a block off Bourbon street, so it can be a bit noisy into the wee hours. The rooms have been updated, and everything looks very modern for an old hotel. The bed was a bit like a trampoline (soft and bouncy) but surprisingly comfortable. I loved it and would definitely stay here again.

Had Bacardi and Cokes in the Carousel bar - how unique and entertaining. As one sits at the bar sipping adult beverages, the entire bar, which is a replica of a carousel, turns, so the view is constantly changing. The staff were friendly and exuded true Southern charm.

We arrived at the hotel a half hour before check in time and were left sitting in the lobby for an hour and a half despite being told that our rooms would be ready by check in time. It was only after complaining to the front desk that someone "remembered" that we were there. The rooms we were offered had a view of the wall of the next building and smelled musty. After a complaint about this we were finally given decent rooms.
In order to qualify for the free wi-fi service we had to sign up to the guest loyalty program, however the service stopped working on New Year's Eve and we were told to sign in to the usual guest access and charges would be reversed on our account. Needless to say this did not happen, resulting with a "discussion" with the front desk when we checked out.
Finally, to add insult to injury, we were charged almost $900 on our credit card "in error". This was only reversed after we picked up the over charge on the account, and three phone calls to the hotel. Because the card is an Australian one we are still out of pocket about $70 in currency conversion fees and exchange rate variations and the hotel doesn't seem to want to return my calls.
So while the rooms are comfortable enough and the location is good, I can't recommend it.

Visited New Orleans with a few friends for a girls weekend New Years trip. Picked hotel monteleone based on the location and online reviews. It's a great location- right in the middle of everything. If you don't have specific restaurants to visit out of the area or other things you want to see, in theory you would need to take any cabs during your stay. You are one block from bourbon street, lots to see, eat, and drink within walking distance.

Check in and out went smoothly. Staff is so nice. Doormen were great too. Everyone was so personable and chatted and seemed to really enjoy their job and making sure your stay was nice.

The decor is very grand and lovely. Perfect for the style of the hotel.

The bathrooms were surprisingly modern for how old the hotel is. A nice surprise and very appreciated. I appreciated the in room keurig machine as well.

The only reason I didn't give the hotel 5 stars is because the beds were not very comfortable. And the bed linens were very old and ragged, with holes. And the pillows were flat and old. The only other downside was the amount of the crowds in the lobby. It was a lot and a little nerve wracking because there was no security by the elevators so with all the foot traffic in the lobby and because of the carousel bar, it was just something I noticed. I know the hotel can't help it and probably likes it.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends planning to visit New Orleans.
