“Steady, but needs to be refreshed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014

The good news is some employees are aware that great customer service is part of the job in a service industry job: Thank you Jabari and Malcolm at the front door, Cleopatra and Asia at J & P Coffee, and all the young men in the garage anxious to do a good job. The bad news is 90% of the front desk staff seem like waiting on customers is the last thing on their mind and greet you sometimes after a long wait while doing nothing, with a frown or neutral look and cannot manage a smile or greeting. When calling prior to my visit to verify and add to my reservation, it took 6 calls to get someone at the front desk to speak with me. This included being put on hold until it rang back, and still no one answering. The housekeeping staff marches to a drummer that is not in sync with needs. Several days while observing my room being surrounded by maid carts, we returned some hours later to find the room still not made. The room while comfortable had a chair that appearred to be used as sharpening bar by a cat and a rug very worn. The overall appearance poolside begged for some fresh paint to freshen up the exterior walls and cover dull gray crud possibly the beginning of mold. The bad things can be fixed with some managerial guidance to oversee the operation in a manner that would elevate the hotel back to prior levels. It is on auto pilot and needs someone to take charge.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms are inside not overlooking Bourbon St

Ron, thank you for taking the time to bring these observations to our attention. Please know that an exciting hotel-wide renovation is planned for next year and will touch each room from top to bottom. We appreciate your recognizing those employees that made your stay special, but we are disappointed that you didn't have the same experience with all our staff. We take these comments very seriously and they are being addressed by management. We hope you that you will give us another try after the renovations.

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Sonesta from June 9 - June 11. The hotel is quite lovely with a beautiful courtyard and lobby. My husband loves jazz and it was great having a jazz club on site. The band was great and the drinks were delicious. We ate the the hotel's restaurant, Desiree. The food was totally awesome! We had dinner at Acme on Monday evening. The pecan cobbler was to die for! Our waitress was excellent! As mention in other reviews, Bourbon Street is a bit noisy until around 2 am, but that is to be expected in New Orleans. I am a light sleeper, but the sounds didn't disrupt my sleep.
Now to the not so good....This is the first time, I have stayed in a quality hotel and wasn't asked about my stay. If the staff at the desk had inquired about my stay, I would have advised them that the wait staff, maids and doormen were wonderful. However the carpeting in our room was absolutely filthy. I don't blame the maid, as the room was dusted, bathroom cleaned and fresh linen was on the bed. I could tell the room had been vacuumed, however the carpeting should be shampooed or replaced. All in all, I would recommend the hotel as it is in an excellent place on Bourbon street and all of the tours do make this hotel a primary drop off and pick up location. Oh. almost forgot, be sure to take the Gator Swamp Tour...Great fun!

This may be the finest overall value in the entire city. By using a variety of travel sites, we were able to secure three nights at Sonesta for about $100 per night. The hotel lobby is ornate and the jazz music club is superb. The swimming pool off of the third floor is one-of-a-kind with great views of the hotel courtyard and the New Orleans skyline. Even though Royal Sonesta is located on Bourbon Street, the noise was kept to a minimum. The room we had for the first two days was not large---the king bed took up lots of room-- but the third day room was more spacious and angular in what my girlfriend referred to as a Cape Cod style, There is a fine coffee house with friendly staffing and a quality restaurant on the premises. The location of Bourbon and Conti Streets assures travelers of being near any sightseeing location in the entire French Quarter. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor number facing the courtyard for more privacy and reduced noise.

We stayed at the Royal Sonesta when I was employed as a school superintendent and attended a conference. This was our 46th wedding anniversary and we "honeymooned" in New Orleans. When we decided to return for our anniversary we naturally looked at the Royal Sonesta and it is just a fantastic hotel right in the middle of the French Quarter. The hotel is wonderful and the staff is equally as wonderful. We had a great time.

From the time we walked in we felt like we was interupting everybodies time. The pool bar was great. We all felt welcome & encouraged to have fun. We realize these employees have ALOT to put up with but that's what New Orleans & Bourbon Street is all about. The staff just seemed burned out.

Deanna, we are very sorry that your stay at our hotel was not better. This is not our normal feedback on the personality of our dedicated team. Our staff works very hard to make each guest feel like they’re part of our family and keeps them coming back to us year after year. We hope you will consider trying us again in the future for the experience so many others have enjoyed.

I stayed here with friends during mardi gras this year. The hotel is beautiful, with an authentic French Quarter feel. The lobby is impressively large and filled with chandeliers, marble and mirrors.

The rooms are spacious, very clean and well appointed and the bedding is comfortable.

Wi-fi is available and free of charge.

A small cafe and bar are conveniently located inside the hotel and we found the prices to be reasonable.

On the whole, the staff (other than one unbelievably rude woman working in the bar) were very friendly and helpful, especially considering what a busy time it was. A special mention should go to the door staff and concierge/luggage service staff.

The only downside was an unexpected additional 60 dollar charge at the end of our stay for security during mardi gras. We totally understood the need for security but would have appreciated being told about it either when we booked or checked in.

On the whole though, a great hotel. I would recommend to couples and groups and would definitely stay here again!

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this Hotel....We had a great time and the Jazz club inside of the hotel is excellent. The rooms are very clean and the staff was very nice. I never heard the noise from outside. Looking forward in returning soon.

The hotel represent the spirit of New Orleans. Most important, the security is wonderful. I felt very safe.......Annette Parker

Room Tip: Make sure you book the room on 3rd floor courtyard, located by the pool
