“Great location, not the greatest service”
Reviewed 4 March 2014

We stayed at Hotel Mon Ami while visiting the El Remate area as a stop over to see the ruins at Tikal. The location of the hotel is right across the street from the lake with a great dock for swimming or enjoying the sunset over the lake. The rooms were pretty good for the price as well, and the one we stayed in was behind and up the hill from the main reception. The only issues we had, and they are fairly minor was that the the sheets or towels in the room were never replaced during our four nights stay. Had it been cool the whole time, it might night have made a difference, but it was hot and humid. So, the sheets and towels all smelled by the third day and were gross by the time we checked out. I believe this may have been due to the fact that they were short staffed at the time and could not leave the front desk, reception, restaurant area. The other odd thing was that the shower head was hooked up to electricity, which I found very odd. The worst thing about it was when you tried to engage this super shower head, it would shock you. Needless to say, electricity and water don't mix well, so we ended up taking these very weak dripping showers everyday because of the fear of electrocution. We ended up checking out a day earlier than planned because we wanted to take a good shower and clean up. This doesn't mean that this place wasn't good, we just didn't get that great of service. It is a good place to stay if visiting Tikal for a day or so. The only other thing I might add was that the owner returned the last day of our stay, and he was just a little creepy.... Other than that, Mon Ami was fine for the cost.

I stayed at Mon Ami for one day and I wish I had stayed for longer. The bungalows are rustic, but absolutely charming. The restaurant is lovely with great staff and an excellent place to meet other travellers. Nice muelle out onto the lake - very picturesque and a great place to relax.

I had a great time there including an excellent morning taking a tour by horse up onto the hills behind El Remate - a great view!

It's a bit of a walk around the lake from the main road, but it's well worth the effort. Emailing to get a booking was a bit hit and miss - I tried twice over a few weeks before I got a reply, but I'm glad I did. After I had arrived they were turning away walk-ins because they were already full.

El Remate is an excellent alternative to Flores and there are other great places in El Remate, but Mon Ami really is great value for money.

We stayed here for 2 nights while exploring Tikal and can't say enough good things about the service from Santiago and the staff. We had two excellent meals in the restaurant, very reasonably priced. The location was perfect because it is half way between Flores and Tikal and made transportation very easy and is ideal for those looking to stay closer to the jungle and out of the "coyote" hotspots where you are haggled all day in Flores. Our cabin was plenty spacious and comfortable and quite reasonably priced.

Santiago (owner) arranged to drive us to the airport for our flight when we left and I even forgot my iPhone in his car and he had it shipped next day express mail to my hotel in Antigua much to my relief at no charge.

We were here for one night with our kids in early January.

Santiago and his staff are very friendly and welcoming. The rooms are simple, clean and comfortable,

We had two great breakfasts at the restaurant with fresh made pancakes and fruit. The staff helped us arrange horse-back riding near the lake and up to an observatory over-seeing El Remate, well worth our time.

I stayed at Mon Ami last October -Santiago, apologies for the late posting, things have been really hectic at this end!- and really enjoyed the quietness of the place, set just in front of the lake in a tranquil setting where I was able to relax from an intense three-day quad trek to El Zotz and another day at Tikal. The casitas are charming, painted with lovely colours, and most seem to have a hammock on the porch, really welcome to relax while daydreaming into the surrounding lush garden. The pontoon to the lake (very warm, turquoise waters!) is just a few steps away. An ideal place to both unwind and prepare for intensive treks. Santiago is a very experienced and knowledgeable guide with many amazing stories to share if you can speak enough Spanish or French; worth getting to know, and listen to. Thank you, and Happy New Year, Mon Ami!

We did not stay here but had a couple meals here, breakfast and dinner. The pancakes were very good. For dinner, try the nightly special. My husband had the shrimp special while I had the vegetable soup and vegetarian salad. We split an order of bruschetta. As with all bruschetta we had in various locations in Guatemala, it is served without basil and plenty of garlic. French wine was also available. The best part about this place are the staff, other travelers and interesting characters. I would consider the cabins here if we returned to the area.

A nice setting with nicely furnished, clean rooms.

We decided to stay for Christmas but soon wished to be somewhere with more life and friendliness. The menu resembled French cuisine in any way and service was incredibly slow often with cold food. We didn't feel welcomed into the jungle paradise during the festive season and were given various rules when attempting to speak to our parents on Christmas day. Despite a beautiful setting I was left wit a bad taste in my mouth, literally and figuratively with this hostel.
