Our family of 4 (2 kids/2adults) stayed for 3 nights at La Casa de Don David August 2013 and it was fantastic. The staff kept the restaurant (absolutely the best around) open late to serve us dinner the night we arrived, arranged outings and generally took care of us including last minute laundry when we came home drenched after a bicycle ride along the lake. The hotel is perfectly located to enjoy the lake for swimming, renting bicycles, or hiking in biotopo Cerro Cahui (an easy walk), or venture out to the local ruins including Tikal and Yaxha. The whole family had a blast, and after looking at the other places to stay along the lake first hand (having spent hours on Trip advisor before our trip) I would recommend Don David's place over any of them, especially for families.

Room Tip: maybe ask for a room away from the parking area - unless you have a car and want to keep an ear on i...

The couple that own the place take immaculate care of the hotel and grounds. The view of the lake is peaceful and beautiful. They deliver drinks via the 'Pelican' to the deck overlooking Lake Peten Itza. . It is a short drive from Tikal and Isla de Flores. The rooms have remote control AC which is the only one we saw in all of Guatemala HOT WATER, which is another thing that is hard to find in Guatemala. FYI If you are a lady that needs a hairdryer buy one when you arrive in Guatemala or bring your own since they are not provided anywhere.

My daughter and I stayed at Hotel La Casa de Don David during our recent trip to Guatemala. We wanted to stay outside of the typical tourist area and this was a great choice. We loved the grounds and setting. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. The rooms are simple but clean and comfortable. We liked being close to Tikal (closer than Flores) and were able to get to Flores and Santa Elena fairly easy, via buses and colectivo taxis. We even had a Tuk Tuk that brought us back one night after the bus stopped running (it was a slow ride, but a great experience)!

I can't say enough about the staff at La Casa de Don David. They were very helpful and made our stay very pleasant. My recommendation: Wait until you get to the hotel to make arrangements for tours. I got hit up by San Juan travel upon arrival at Santa Elena and wish I had waited to make my arrangements with the hotel directly.

Next time I go to Tikal, I will stay here longer.

La casa de don David is beautifully located at the lake and only half the distance it would take from Flores to get to Tikal. From here it's a short & cheap bus ride to get to the archeological area. Furthermore staff and service are excellent, location is tranquil, food is good and you will appreciate the efforts of don David to make this place in a 'home away from home'for all travellers.
So our advice...skip Flores tourism bustle & hustle, if you only want to get to Tikal and enjoy the gardens at the Don's. Some critique ? Yes, I agree with other reviewers : a pool would make it perfect !

We were very happy with our stay. The only thing I wish is that they had a jacuzzi or pool. The service was wonderful. 2 out of 3 meals we had were very good and free! It was a great location on the lake, near restaurants, and stores. The hotel itself had beautiful grounds and felt very secure as you had to be buzzed in to enter the gates.

Make sure to take in the viewing dock. It had a gorgeous view of the lake!

My stay with Casa de Don David felt a little like staying in a small, self-contained community. Very safe, very welcoming, all holiday services readily available on-site, such as arranging transport, doing laundry, etc. The food was excellent, and the service too. I also liked the native plants in the garden, and the zip-line drinks service to the terrace is very original. Location ideal for day trips to Tikal and Flores. One of the very best places I have stayed.
