We loved La Casa de Don David. The people were super friendly and helpful, the grounds were lovely, the room was great and had AC(!!!!) and wifi, and it was a good budget option, especially because a meal is included with each room.
We were there to do some birding and to see Tikal. The Maya Circle garden and the observation decks were great places to relax and watch birds. Plus the Toucan Express drink/snack delivery system David has rigged up is not to be missed! It's a marvel!
The front desk arranged a sunrise tour of a Tikal for us. Be prepared, sunrise tour pick-up is 3:45 in the morning!! It includes a box lunch ( or breakfast as the case may be). We were thrilled to be sitting on top of a temple waiting for sunrise even though the fog impeded the view of the sun actually rising. It was still pretty magical to watch the other temples appear from the dark, hear the howler monkeys wake up, and, in our case, to feel an earthquake rock the temple. Exploring a Tikal and learning about this ancient culture was fascinating, and the birding there was terrific as well. Luckily, our guide knew a lot about birds!
La Casa de Don David is right in El Remate, and we enjoyed walking around the town one afternoon, buying ice cream from a street vendor in a rainstorm, looking at all the wood carved handicrafts, and trying out the local snacks at the corner shop: $1Q each!!
We highly recommend La Casa de Don a David if you're looking for a budget-friendly place to stay near Tikal.
