Reviewed 7 May 2010

This Hotel is 30 minutes away from Rio Dulce. Unless you have your own transportation you are stranded and at the mercy of staff that only want to charge outlandish prices. Dirty cabins, rude staff, bad food at expensive prices.

Finca Paraiso is a resort of separate cabins along the shore, located about two hours from Fronteras in Lago Izabal on the north side. Lago Izabal is huge, about 40 miles long and 15 miles wide. Finca Paraiso appears to be a working farm as well. There are numerous farm animals about and from time to time, you catch a whiff of them as well.

We sailed from Fronteras here on Las Sirenas, Sailing was easy and we arrived late in the afternoon (New Year’s Eve). The party was just starting.

We first walked through the resort, along a dirt road for about 20 minutes to some hot springs. We paid a small fee (Q10) and walked another 10 minutes into the forest. If you want, you can take a tractor from Fina Paraiso to the hot springs for Q50.

We came upon a thermal pool, fed by a thirty foot waterfall that was borderline scalding. It was fun to find the right spot where the cold river water mixed with the hot waterfall to get the perfect soaking temperature. There were about 20-30 people here so it wasn’t private by any means. However, it was a wonderful stop and should not be missed if you end up at Finca Paraiso. If you bring a flashlight, there is a small cave to the right of the waterfall. Crawl in there (hold your nose because it is majorly stinky) and you’ll see hundreds of bats on the ceiling.) Note that this was the only place in Guatemala (the hot springs area) where we found kids asking for money.

In the evening, we joined a large group at the bar, dancing and carrying on. We had a blast, learning how to merengue, and made complete fools of ourselves trying to keep up with the Guatemalans. I resorted to drinking games and having fun any way. At midnight, the sky lit up with fireworks, there were lots
of hugs and kisses, and we spent the next few hours listening to music and finally dozed off around 3am.

The cabins themselves look basic. Toilets were separate from the cabins. Since we stayed on a sailboat (Las Sirenas), we did not stay at the resort itself.

There was no English spoken by the staff here. There were a few guests who spoke English and were very helpful.
